News from 2002...

West Country theme for Spring Gala 2003 The Special Events Planning Team have been discussing the details of the next Spring Gala - one of THE events of the British heritage railway scene.

Not tempted by the possibility of a couple of large main line locomotives that may be stabled on the Branch around the Gala weekend - 28-30 March 2003 - the team seem to have opted for a more conservative "West Country" branch line theme.

Up to five guest locomotives are being lined up, along with Pete Waterman's "heavy goods" GWR 2-8-0T no 5224, to join the line's resident locomotives.

Hymek D7076 returns to the West... Subject to agreement from the owner – former Western Region ‘Hymek’ Class 35 diesel hydraulic locomotive no D7076 will visit the WSR from mid-July to the end of September 2003. The loco is normally based at the East Lancs Railway, and is one of four preserved ‘Hymek’, two of which – nos D7017 and D7018 are based on the WSR. Prior to arriving, no D7076 is to be repainted from its current early BR two tone green to British Railways corporate ‘all over blue’ livery by the ELR for their Diesel Gala in early July. This will in fact be the second visit by no D7076 to the WSR, having worked on the line at a Diesel Gala event in May 1997.

"Kinlet Hall" to return in 2003... Brief news item from Minehead that agreement - in principle - has been reached with the owners for GWR "Hall" 4-6-0 no 4936 "Kinlet Hall" to visit the Railway from mid-July until after the Autumn Steam Gala.

Mark Smith reports very encouraging and positive discussions with "Kinlet" Chairman Peter Weaver.

The "Hall" enjoyed a successful and popular visit to the line in 2001.

The Journal hits a century! A milestone has been reached in the history of the Association and the Journal itself with the publication of the 100th edition of the "WSR Journal". Started twenty-five years ago by Allan Stanistreet (who is still very active on the Railway and with the pen - or computer more likely these days) the first numbers were dominated by the extensions of the line and illustrated with photos of the Bagnalls, "Victor" and "Vulcan". I suggest those around in 1978 would not have imagined, even in their wildest dreams, the items and pictures contained in No 100...

Turning a Terrier in 1979... A set of four photographs have been unearthed by long-time WSR supporter, Nick Jones, showing how the Railway turned the Terrier locomotive no 32678 back in 1979. No operational turntable - as now - so how could the little engine be turned in readiness for a roll-on part for a BBC filming session at Crowcombe Station?

Train times for 2003... The train times for 2003 have been published in a colourful leaflet. The times and leaflet are broadly similar to those of 2002.

Just about the only minor change is the permanency granted to the Bishops Lydeard to Norton Fitzwarren and back DMU turn on the Blue Timetable dates. This diagram was introduced in 2002 to enable line inspection on this little used but essential three mile section.

Building starts on new booking office... The existing booking office at Bishops Lydeard provided a much improved facility when built a few years ago when the old period affair in the station building was relegated to museum status. But the upstart has begun to creak over the intervening seasons due to the increase in passenger traffic at the southern terminus. And now, a third larger booking office is rising from the ground next to the shop. When finished, it will provide a much better environment for both clerks and passengers. No decision has yet been made on the future of the present structure.

Return visit for no 41312? It seems possible that the Ivatt 2-6-2T no 41312 may make a return visit to West Somerset metals in the spring. The loco would be ideal for the West Country Branch Line theme proposed for the Steam Gala in March. Nothing is confirmed yet, so the usual caveats apply...

The "Strawberry Sunset" Special On 13 June 2003, a rather special dining train will leave Bishops Lydeard for the twenty mile run to Minehead. The lucky two hundred passengers aboard the "Strawberry Sunset" will enjoy aself service buffet of Terrines of Smoked Salmon, Chicken Peperonato or Chargrilled Vegetables, with various salads, roll and butter and a bottle of wine per table

Then, on the return journey, the special will stop alongside the beach at Blue Anchor Bay, whilst passengers enjoy strawberries and clotted cream and a glass of Champagne whilst the sun sets over the Bristol Channel.

History on a Heritage Railway Early news, albeit brief, of two initiatives being taken by the Friends of Minehead Station (FoMS) next year.

On 5 April 2003, FoMS will be arranging and running a "Local History" train, looking at the multitude of historical sites, stories and issues along the Railway, ranging from Prehistory to Castles to Mills to Quarrying to Agriculture.

Later, on 14 May, a "Natural History" train will be running, again, arranged by FoMS. This will be similar, I imagine, to the successful David Bailey "Wildlife Specials" of 2002.

From the Undergrowth... The Lineside Team will be at Washford on 7,8 December clearing the undergrowth choking the ditch on the Up side of the bank. This will allow Mick Phelps and his crew in to repair the washouts and other damage. This ditch is large - the Team Leader is known to have fallen in during the last clean out some seven years ago! The ditch - curretnly in poor shape - stops the soil wash from fields above the cutting washing down onto the track.

In January, the Team may need to finish the ditch clearance but we have also been asked to finish the bank on the curve just outside Watchet Station on the Minehead side. There is no visibility so it needs to be done with no trains running and because of the location in the middle of Watchet the Team will have their own train to take brash out to Doniford to burn. This will be 11,12 January.

Tidy train is, provisionally, 1,2 March but will depend on the amount of material put out over the winter.

Barrow restoration delights Station Master Some time ago, the Friends of Minehead Station (FoMS) learned that Blue Anchor station had a platform barrow which had been reduced almost to a kit of metal parts as the wood had rotted away and, as they had the manpower and the tools, FoMS offered to have a go at rebuilding it. The metalwork was collected by a special trip working of the Class 03 diesel shunter with one flat wagon and a brake van.

The barrow is now almost complete and when Pete Treharne, the Blue Anchor Station Master, visited Minehead yesterday he took the opportunity to inspect the work. Pronouncing himself satisfied with the work done he posed for a number of pictures - see NEWSPIX page - with the renovation team. A suitable plaque marking the rebuild has been attached to the barrow and it only remains to finish painting and book another special working to deliver it to Blue Anchor before train services start again.

2002 could be a record year for WSR... At the end of November, a total of 161,318 passengers had been carried – and with a very healthy number of advance bookings for the December trains, the WSR remains on course to carry more passengers than ever before in 2002. The overall passenger figure for the record year of 2001 was 169,275.

Test run for Teddy Class 14 no D9526 made three test runs, on 30 November 2002, from Williton to Washford and return with Crompton no 6566 which was taken as dead load and "insurance".

The bonnet over the engine was left off to allow the travelling engineers to monitor and spot any problems. However, the only problem encountered was with the power handle accelerator valve, but this was rectified at Williton between the second and third runs.

A Right Royal Visit.. The Duke of Edinburgh travelled down to Somerset overnight aboard the Royal Train, which left London Euston the night before at 11.17pm, making for a 4.45am arrival at Bishops Lydeard. After a "recess stop", the Royal Train, headed by Class 47 no 47798, departed Bishops Lydeard at 8.10am bound for Minehead.

At each of the ten stations a small crowd of onlookers gathered and the Duke responded with an appearance and a wave at the window.

Arrival at Minehead was right on schedule at 9.20am and the Duke met Railway officials and volunteers. The line-up included civil dignatories; Roger Lizars and Mark Smith representing the Railway Board; a trio of Friends of Minehead Station, Alan Grieve, Frances Bristow and Gordon Harris; Hein Burger, the Railway's Commercial Manager; Trackers Gary Filer, Jonathan Mitchell and Shane Tarr, and Ian Salt, Apprentice Fitter. After being introduced to Robin George, representing the Dinmore Manor Fund, the Duke accepted the chance of a short footplate ride aboard no 7820, before bidding farewell to the Railway, setting off across Exmoor by road for an engagement at Lynmouth.

The Royal Train departed Minehead at 10.05am and returned to the national rail network right time about an hour or so later.

As stated in the Railway's November OnLine, "...another aspect to consider is our progress after the last 15 years and that as 2002 comes to its end we are viewed by the rest of the Railway industry as part of the national network and able to handle all traffic offered to us in a thoroughly professional manner. Thanks to everyone along the line who did so much to make the visit a success and to present the Railway at its best."

Not the December Gala As pointed out in the December OnLine from the Railway Company, whilst it isn't billed as such, it certainly feels like a Gala at the moment!

It all started with the DUNSTER by CANDLELIGHT trains on Friday 6 December, with two steam trains and a DMU on Bishops Lydeard-Minehead round trips, plus a "Quantock Bell" dining train thrown in for good measure.

Then, next day, there are four Santa Specials between Bishops Lydeard and Crowcombe Heathfield, a similar mix of "Candlelight" trains, plus a "Candlelight Express" Bristol to Minehead First Great Western Trains High Speed Train, run by Cheshire Railtours.

On the Sunday, four more Santa specials at the London end of the line, with four Minehead to Blue Anchor Santa Specials plus several "cheap fare" DMU runs all stations Williton to Minehead and back.

No let up on Monday evening with the two "Carol Trains", one from each end, and which meet up at Williton for a truly rousing sing-song.

And to round off an interesting five days of festive gaiety, a relief Minhead to Williton and back "Carol Train" on the Tuesday evening...

Even more trains in December... Shoppers living at the Country End of the Railway can take advantage of extra trains.

On 8 December 2002, trains leave Williton for Minehead at 12.25pm, 2.35pm and 5.20pm, and leave Minehead for Williton at 1.20pm, 4.45pm and 6pm

On 14 and 21 December 2002, trains leave Stogumber for Minehead at 9.50am and 1.30pm, and leave Minehead for Williton at 12.30pm and 4.15pm.

One of the heritage diesel multiple units will be used on these services which also call at Williton, Watchet, Washford, Blue Anchor and Dunster.

Also, a relief "Carol Train" is now booked to run in the evening of 10 December running from Minehead to Williton and back.

Green Goddess fails to save Flailer The Railway had to call out a "Green Goddess" after the Atlas lineside flail/digger machine caught fire on Combe Florey bridge on Friday 15 November. The machine was destroyed in the blaze. No-one was hurt, and the fog signals and operator's sandwiches were also reported safe and well.

We understand Rexquote of Bishops Lydeard have very kindly loaned the Railway a similar machine to enable lineside work to continue until a permanent replacement can be obtained.

Vandalism attempt foiled An stupid attempt by vandals to create a potentially dangerous situation was foiled by the indicator in the signalbox showing a signal to be "off" when it clearly should have been"on".

On investigation, officials from the Railway discovered the arm on one of the signals had been moved and jammed into the lower position, which of course indicates a "clear" aspect.

However, the vandals will be disappointed to learn that railway signalling, even "heritage" equipment, is rather more sophisicated than imagined, as the signalman could not have been able to set a potential conflicting movement.

If you are out and about on or near the line, please keep an eye out for the unusual - and, if you do see anything suspicious, contact the Railway immediately on 01643 704996.

Bristol-Minehead High Speed Train Once again in early December, a High Speed Train will traverse the heritage metals of the West Somerset Railway. On 7 December, leaving Bristol Temple Meads at 3.25pm one of FIRST GREAT WESTERN's flagship fleet call at Nailsea & Backwell, Yatton, Weston-super-Mare, Highbridge and Taunton before branching off at Norton Fitzwarren and heading for a stop at Dunster and arriving at Minehead at 6 o'clock.

Most of the hundreds of passengers aboard will make for the spectaular Dunster by Candlelight event, held at this time each year, either from Dunster Station or from the terminus at Minehead.

The train, chartered by Cheshire Railtours (telephone 01984 640005), returns later in the evening with a 9.15pm departure from Minehead.

Another example of the West Somerset Railway doing what was designed for and what it does best!

News from a fellow Great Western line... A correspondent would like to draw your attention to the "crisis" that faces the Gloucester Warwickshire Steam Railway which, like the WSR, was also originally a GWR line.

"Sustrans the cycle developer have applied for planning permission to build a cycle track between Broadway and Honeybourne, thereby severing permanently the chance to extend the line between Stratford and Cheltenham. We must pull together as railway enthusiasts and do everything we can to try and stop this and particularly as Sustrans control similar track beds all around the country.
Details can be found at www.cheltenhamextension.fsnet.co.uk/sustrans.html."

Sponsored walk news A sponsored walk was held on Sunday 10 November - giving participants the opportunity to walk along the trackbed from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard, starting from Minehead at 9am. All monies generated by this event are to be donated to SURE – the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment – at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, in memory of Sharon Bolton.

The first person to arrive at Bishops Lydeard was Mr Adrian Kellett of Wiveliscombe who was greeted by WSRA Hon President John Pearce (see picture right).

Also visible in the picture are WSR members Dr Tony Bray, Don Edwards and Mrs Anne Bray.

Logging on A report has come in from a member of today's Log Train gang, and is reproduced, more or less, verbatum, to illustrate how a day out of the line picking up logs can affect your mind (only kidding):

"Despite atrocious weather conditions an intrepid band of stalwart volunteers today loaded 50 tons of logs from along the lineside cleared by the gallant WSRA Special Project Group, particularly but not exclusively, in the Leigh Woods area."

"After delivering around five tons of logs to favoured customers at Crowcombe (oops! nearly forgot the Heathfield bit) and Stogumber the remaining forty five tons (or should it be tonnes?) were offloaded at Dunster, just down from Dunster West Level Crossing - partly into waiting trailers and partly along the lineside for later collection by the Log Merchant."

"During the operation two extremely furtive figures emerged from the surrounding herbage and proceeded to take photographic evidence of the procedings for some secretive purpose known only to themselves."

"Undeterred by this flashily illuminated disturbance of the descending darkness ("proper dimpsy 't'wer' " as they say in West Somerset) our intrepid volunteers completed the job and disappeared back up the line, quickly melting into the gathering gloaming (as they say in Scotland - and quite what that has to do with it is anyone's guess!) and sea fret (as they say almost universally!) back up the line to a spot not shown on any Ordnance Survey Map but known in Wizzer circles as BL."

"Thence to get in their cars and drive home to more desirable spots - notably Minehead!"

Trains in November and December An extra train ran on 7 and 10 November leaving Minehead at 1.30pm for the round trip to Williton and back. This web site apologies for late notice of these trains in these pages.

The December suite of seasonal specials are full or filling fast. The Carol Trains are full (with talk of a relief being run for the Minehead one); many of the Santa trains are full but there are still plenty of seats available; plenty of room on the Friday 6 December Dunster by Candlelight specials, but two of the three on the Saturday (7 December) are full. Best advice is to book as soon as possible.

Seasonal Trains are filling up... The Railway is running lots of trains in the run up to Christmas and pre-booking is advised for intending travellers on many of these special services.

For example, the Carol Trains on 9 December are both fully booked, along with the 4.45pm Dunster-by-Candlelight special on 7 December, and the Coastal Belle on 14 December.

There are plenty of seats available on the three Dunster-by-Candlelight specials on 6 December (4pm, 4.45pm and 5.45pm). The 4pm on the following day has plenty of room, but the later 5.45pm is filling fast.

Santa Steam Specials are also filling fast, with less than fifty seats left on nine of the departures from Bishops Lydeard. With the exception of one from Minehead, there are plenty of seats remaining on all other trains. Ring 01643 704996 for an update.

Educational Workshop Geoff Evens and Katie James report, "On Saturday 26 October we held an Educational Workshop at Bishops Lydeard with a view to investigating ways of increasing the number of Schools Visits to the WSR. We invited local teachers, WSR staff and volunteers and other interested parties to attend."

"School parties were once a seasonal phenomenon on all Heritage Railways, numerous, self-organising and a source of revenue. Suddenly they mostly disappeared; the change was the introduction of the National Curriculum, which divides learning into a number of Key Stages and describes what children in the UK are taught during each academic year."

"At the Workshop, we aimed to explore the subjects taught within each Key Stage of the National Curriculum and to examine where the WSR can interact with schools and teachers to provide a resource within those Key Stages. For example, two elements, which have been consistently of interest to those schools that still visit the WSR, are Victorian Britain and Britain since 1930.With schools exploring topics within these two subject areas gives us most visits and generates the most interest."

"The traditional school party visit was a train ride and little else (whilst Bee World at Stogumber was in operation this generated some schools traffic). We recognise that today’s schools and teachers require much more than that; although the train ride will still be highlight of the visit. We wanted to begin developing with the team thoughts on what material could be contained in an Education pack that would allow schools to prepare effectively for a visit and to maximise on all the Railway’s potential. Some of the items that might be included were details of how to book and how to obtain the best value for money including copies of the current timetable, how to organise preview visits for teachers so that they could discuss their specific needs, details of how to request a specialised School Party Guide and finally, if required, question sheets for distribution on the day."

"During the day, many topics were explored and a general feeling was gained for where the WSR can start to develop areas of expertise and knowledge. It is intended that this is to be the first of possibly three workshops between now and the beginning of the next academic year (September 2003)."

Finally we would like to ask all you teachers out there in WSR land for your thoughts on ways of developing this initiative. We appreciate you may not wish to get actively involved with the Workshops, after all you volunteer on the Railway to get way from the classroom, but every little helps."

Friends of Minehead Station The Friends of Minehead Station (FOMS) are holding a Grand Christmas Bazaar at the Methodist Church Hall in Minehead on 16 November between 10am and 1pm. Admission will be 20p. The planned range of goodies on sale will include gifts, handicrafts cakes, preserves plus the usual array of bric a brac and a supply of books from the "Readers Halt" stocks.

The "Halt" will be closing for the winter from the start of November (although it may open if weather is reasonably clement during the December trains). However Frances Bristow and Kathy Nott will be in attendance on most Wednesdays sorting incoming stock and will no doubt be delighted to see any potential customers.

Meanwhile winter FOMS working parties will be taking place on Mondays and Wednesdays and all extra helpers will be welcome. October was principally concerned with painting to get all ready for the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Royal Train on 1 November.

Turbot, turbot, turbot, turbot, turbot... The Railway has recently purchased five 34-ton bogie “Turbot” wagons from EWS, which had been stored in Fairwater Yard, Taunton for several months having last been used in 1997/98 for the transport of stone in connection with the new sea defence scheme at Minehead.

The five – Nos DB978105, DB978037, DB978348, DB978622 and DB978032 – were all built at Shildon in 1982-83 to Lot 4021, and were delivered the short distance to Bishops Lydeard by road. They will be used on permanent way trains on the line, and one – No DB978622 – has already received a quick repaint in "engineering department green".

Crowcombe Heathfield goes virtual Regular and long-serving volunteer signalman, Martin Southwood, has not only added a tree-surgery string to his bow, but is also a webmaster!

Not surprisingly, Martin has decided on his beloved Crowcombe Heathfield Station for his web site at mysite.freeserve.com/chstn and includes features on the Gardens and the Signal Box, with other pages showing photographs taken before restoration.

Crowcombe Heathfield Station is always worth a personal visit. Now you can do it from your PC...

WSR braves the storms... Weather stops trains on the Big Railway, but not the WSR! With strong winds and driving rain, many TOCs cancelled their services today. Staff on the WSR battled against the elements to ensure that their services ran. The 10.25 ex Bishops Lydeard DMU service formed of the green class 117 set was stopped at Roebuck by debris and a fallen tree. Staff, including 3 PW staff, the Guard and the TTI quickly and efficiently removed the offending item to allow the train to pass.

However, at Stogumber station, the train, even though slowing for a station stop, was stopped abruptly due to a 30ft tree that had fallen across it's path. The tree narrowly missed the platform shelter, crashed through the fence, crushed a platform seat and came to rest on the opposite boundary fence. Again the 3 travelling PW staff who were en route to Williton, plus the Guard, TTI and an off duty driver set about removing the tree. The tree was cut into sections for easy removal - no easy task with bow saws. The trunk of the tree was so thick, that the wedges and sledge hammer from the van emergency cupboard were used as well as much sawing. Eventually, the tree was removed and the train progressed to Williton. A small crowd of passengers had gathered on the platform to watch the events, and none of them complained of being delayed by one hour. One was even heard to comment that you'd never get co-operation like that on the mainline!

Meanwhile, an off duty signalman becomes a lumberjack. Confused? Read on. Martin Southwood, a WSR signalman, left his bed early on Sunday morning after reports that a large tree had fallen across the line at Bicknoller. Even though not rostered for work, Martin took his own chainsaw to the location and removed the fallen tree to allow service trains to pass.

Special Events for 2003 announced The Spring Steam Gala 2003 - one of the most popular events on the British railway heritage calendar - will take place on 28-30 March 2003, with a "Preview Day" on the 27th.

The first of three new events is the “The CrossCountry Network: Past, Present & Future” on 10-11 May, which is a special diesel and steam event being run in association with Virgin Trains, and during which a Virgin Voyager will be named "Somerset Voyager". The other two new events are “The Grand Trains Extravaganza” weekend on 25-26 October which promises lots of trains, and a Winter Steam Festival on 28 December.

The other regulars are there - the "Thomas" weekend (5-6 July); the "Steam Fayre and Vintage Rally" (2-3 August); the CAMRA Real Ale Weekend (13-14 September) and the Autumn Steam Gala, which in 2003, moves back a month to 3-5 October.

Back to normal... As David Holmes, our Lineside Supremo, comments, "OK. So he has been and I heard he particularly admired the neat pile of logs at Leigh Woods, but sorry he has a prior arrangement for next weekend, so I'm afraid we're on our own so to speak!"

"The plans for next weekend - 9,10 November - are confirmed. We shall leave Bishops Lydeard at 9.30am, and I hope to be back no later than 5pm. Please bring a flask at the travelling tea urn will not be coming with us."

"Looking further ahead, the Gang have been asked to clear access to the ditch that runs along the top of the up side of Washford Bank running down the gradient from Dragon's Bridge. For those with long memories we cleared this seven years ago, but the ditch needs maintenance and it has grown over again. Therefore we shall visit in December and give it our best effort."

It's number 220 008... The WSRA WEBSITE reports, "Virgin Trains has confirmed that one its Class 220 Voyager unit No 220 008 will be renamed Somerset Voyager in a ceremony on the WSR (exact location to be decided) during the 'CrossCountry' weekend on 10-11 May 2003."

No 5542 heads Engineer's train On Sunday 13 October, severe weather in West Somerset brought a tree down at Dunster after the passing of the up "Quantock Belle" (headed by GWR 2-6-2T no 5542) but in front of the 2.25pm ex Bishops Lydeard which was held for about 55 minutes whilst "West Somerset Thunderbird" effected a rather swift tree clearance - it was raining horses and cows [official term, so it seems] so they didn’t hang about.

The planned light engine movement to return no 5542 from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead was aborted.

No 5542 made its debut appearance on a permanent way working in the afternoon of Monday 14 October hauling three loaded ballast hoppers and ex-GWR "Toad" from Bishops Lydeard to Dunster, proving it a real mixed-traffic loco. A real branch line scene was created...

A trio of coincidences... It seems history does repeat itself. With an eery set of similarities, too!

As reported on this web site and elsewhere, the Duke of Edinburgh will travel over the full twenty three miles of the West Somerset Railway to arrive at Minehead at 9.20am on 1 November 2002. He will spend some time meeting officers and volunteers of the Railway, and witness some live steam, courtesy of "Dinmore Manor", before making the trip over the splendid Exmoor coastal hills to Lynmouth to help locals remember the Floods which devastated the Devon harbour town in August 1952.

It seems it is a repeat performance. We can reveal the Duke made use of the Royal Train and the Minehead Branch when he visited Lynmouth on 29 October 1952.

A correspondent on the Yahoo GWR-List has kindly provided the following copy of an entry in the December 1952 Railway Observer which states: "Minehead Branch - On the 29th October HRH the Duke of Edinburgh started his West of England Tour at Minehead, and a special train was provided which was hauled on the branch by no 5376 (83D) in beautiful condition, even the brass safety-valve cover having been polished for the occasion. The special train was partly made up from Royal Train stock and arrived punctually at its advertised time, 9.15 am. Presumably a Laira locomotive was used in order to take the train direct to Plymouth afterwards and await the Royal Party there. Whilst visiting Lynmouth later on the same day the Duke travelled up the Cliff Railway, in which he took a great interest. The car was suitably beflagged, this being the first 'Royal Train on the line since it opened in 1890."

Note the similar date, arrival time and the VIP passenger...

Fun and games 2... Some not-to-be-taken-seriously observations of the remote possibility of a WSR base in Taunton itself...

The old Minehead Bay, now overgrown, would provide room for a short train and run-round facilities. Engines arriving with longer trains, now normally seven-coaches, would require shunt-release.

The old carriage sidings that extend on either side of Forty Steps Footbridge to the west of the station offer much more scope for a station with appropriate appointments for both passengers and train operations.

On the down side, the old sidings between the main lines and the now removed goods loop (which followed the line of the derelict Grand Western Canal) provide space for development, but would require WSR trains to cross the main lines by way of a flat crossing or a flyover.

The far end of the carriage sidings, next to Taunton School playing field, could provide space for a WSR yard.

Fun and games... Some not-to-be-taken-seriously observations of the "Royal Effect" beginning to take hold of the Railway...

A well-known driver has now perfected his famous wave and has embarked on launching a new "Royal Welcome" gesture which he is practising with great gusto on any female volunteer who gets in his way.

Although the weather has turned a more seasonal shade of grey, anyone visiting Minehead would be well advised to bring sunglasses as a brilliant white gloss is beginning to adorn anything that doesn't move.

And the tubs outside the station have suddenly sprouted red white and blue flowers which lead one to the suspicion that the gardening department had some foreknowledge of the impending event. Let's just hope they last out the intervening gales and vandals.

Rumour also has it that the StationMaster was seen at the tailor earlier in the week (he replaced his sailing cap with a more railwaylike affair earlier in the season, so maybe he also has the gift of foresight!).

Apparently special arrangements are being made to cater for the influx of local councillors suddenly taking an interest in the WSR. "Well, of course, we have been keen supporters all along really, it's just that we have to be seen to be taking an impartial view".

Royal Train for West Somerset The Royal Train is scheduled to visit Minehead in November. The Railway Company made this statement tonight:

"On Friday 1st November 2002 HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will make a brief visit to Minehead Station to see the West Somerset Railway and meet representatives of the Railway's workforce on his way to visit Lynton and Lynmouth.

The Royal Train is expected to arrive at Minehead at 9.20am, and the visit is planned to be of fifteen minutes duration. I will issue more details just as soon as security issues and Palace protocol permit. Mark Smith Managing Director. "

And it's goodbye to no 80136 Seems like it has been for forever, but the year long stay of BR Class 4MT 2-6-4T no 80136 is due to end with an autumn departure, by road, for Crewe.

A number of repairs are to be carried out on the Standard Tank over the winter, including tyre turning.

We look forward, with luck, to the return of the loco at some future time.

CAMRA washup report... Somerset CAMRA held the festival 'wash-up' meeting recently where, among other things, the winning beers were announced. There are two awards, which festival go-ers are asked to vote for, one of which is Somerset Beer of the Festival, that is, the most voted for beer brewed in the County. The winner of this award in 2002 is Glastonbury Ales '5542 Revivale', one of the three beers specially brewed for our festival, and one that proved very popular with WSR (off duty) staff and visitors alike. The other award, Beer of the Festival, goes to Triple FFF Brewing Company from Four Marks, Hampshire, for their 'Moondance'. This ale is a regular award winner countrywide. A little over 5,000 pints of beer and cider were enjoyed by festival goers over the weekend. The bar was drunk dry at two minutes to closing time on Sunday.

The WSR have reported healthy passenger numbers over the weekend, considerably higher than the equivalent mid-September 2001 weekend. In fact, the passenger total fell only slightly short of the 2001 CAMRA weekend tally. That event was held two weekends earlier in the year, during the high season school summer holiday period.

Donations to Minehead RNLI collecting boxes raised almost £500 during the event.

The 4th WSR/CAMRA Real Ale Festival is scheduled for 13 and 14 September 2003. Hertfordshire Rail Tours have already reserved an incoming charter path for the Saturday. An all steam service is under consideration for daytime service trains during the 2003 event.

Cutting back and log train On 13 and 13 October the venue is again Leigh Woods - to finish the down side and start thinning the up side. I will bring the funicular on the Saturday to bring the logs up the bank, and Pete Vile is coming with a tractor and trailer to haul some logs out by road.

The Log Train will run on 9 November -leaving Bishops Lydeard at 9.30am, returning about five in the evening. It will be diesel hauled probably the class 25, or maybe the class 33. We shall collect as much as we can and take it to Dunster for dropping on the ground or loading directly onto waiting transport if it can be arranged. Please spread the word as the more hands the better...

No 5542 piles on the miles... Ex-GWR 2-6-2T no 5542 - everybody's favourite former Minehead Branch loco - has seen further service during the recent 1960s Weekend.

The "Small Prairie" double headed the Saturday 11.20am Bishops Lydeard to Minehead with "Large Prairie" no 4160 with Driver Renwick, Fireman Lee and Inspector Wood on the footplate.

Later, no 5542 headed the "Coastal Belle" from Minehead to Williton and back and all those aboard enjoyed the romp up Washford Bank in each direction.

On Sunday, the loco paired up with BR 4MT no 80136 for a spin to Lydeard and back.

All looks well for a entry to full service in a week or two.

Postcard from Butlinland, Minehead An interesting "old" postcard has found it's way to the West Somerset Railway on the Web, and shows the "Duchess of Hamilton" and "Knowle" together at Butlin's, Minehead. The picture was taken from the chair lift, probably in the mid-1960s.

It is good to know that both machines are still very much in existence today.

Time warp on HTV On Saturday's lunchtime HTV News there was a report that the West Country will have to make do with some of it's older trains for longer than expected as the Strategic Rail Authority was refusing to sanction as many new trains as the TOCs would like. As the report was read, to the surprise of many, there was a picture of Guard Mike Endacott blowing his whistle and then a shot of the Custard and Cream DMU at Bishops Lydeard followed by a sequence from cab of the DMU leaving Lydeard for Minehead.

Nice to see that the media are up to date...

News from the Shed at Williton Much steady progress on the extensive restoration ex-Southern Railway West Country 4-6-2 no 34046 "Braunton" is being made behind the scenes at the Williton Shed. A detailed report will appear as usual in the next WSR Journal, and meantime, readers might be interested to learn that the right hand cylinder has seen much attention recently, with a new piston head now ordered from the Mid-Hants. Work has proceeded on the valve piston heads; the motion brackets; the rear dragbox and much patience has been required as the "nest" of lubrication pipes grows in complexity. The boiler has not been neglected, with the repairs completed to the barrel itself. Inside, much welding has taken place. The coupled wheels are now finished to resemble a mirror and draw many comments from visitors wondering where the new ones came from. Well done all involved.

The WSRA's pannier tank no 6412 remains at Toddington and has been enjoying the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway's boiler water treatment with much mud being removed.

At Williton, the Siphon G owned by the "813 Group" will be moved out of the Shed and allow their 4-wheel GWR carriage to be moved to the north end, making room for works on a new load bearing floor, where the tender frame for "Braunton" may be constructed

News snippets... The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group hope to have the Class 14 no 9526 out in the yard at Williton for the 1960s weekend but they have advised that it will not be ready for service for a couple of weeks thereafter at least, due to one or two components being unavailable.

The Company CME and MD were reported boiler-spotting at LNWR Crewe on 24 September. No 5193's boiler is on target for return to Minehead by end of November 2002. They were also noticed measuring up the Super D with a future, perhaps 2003/4 Gala in mind.

New screening procedures for coal have been agreed with the suppliers, EagleEnergy, to eliminate the boulder sized lumps which have been causing the Railway's firemen headaches in recent weeks. Anything which will not fall through a 200mm screen will be rejected.

Small Prairie to the Rescue GWR "Small Prairie" 2-6-2T no 5553, which has been based on the Railway for running-in purposes, will depart at short notice to participate in light steam at "The Great Western Steam Convention" at Swindon this weekend , then to Tyseley for completion.

A Prairie (possibly no 4144) had been promised from GWS at Didcot but cannot be released due a derailment on the main line resulting in the access points being plain lined pending acquisition of replacements. So it was WSR to the rescue, with a bit of serious help from LNWR.

Class 14 D9526 bursts into life Class 14 diesel-hydraulic 0-6-0 no D9526 has been coaxed into life again by the dedicated engineers at Williton. For the first time in nine years, the engine was successfully started on 14 September. Later, the locomotive ventured through the doors of the "Chapel" into the autumn sunlight and gave an invisible blink.  Watchet's East Quay in the news The East Quay at Watchet has hit the local headlines again. The West Somerset District Council have scrapped the deal with developers Dean and Dyball who had planned to build eighteen harbourside homes on the disused docks along with commercial facilities for boat owners. The project has been delayed, and if re-negotiations are unsuccessful, the Council will seek alternative proposals.

This site is, of course, adjacent to the Railway. It was created in the early 1860s by the original West Somerset Railway, who infilled the triangle of the old harbour and created the East Wharf we see today. This was in commercial use until just a few years ago, and now overlooks the new marina, run by Dean and Dyball.

Nos 5542 and 5553 enjoy "firsts"... A local correspondent reports, "GWR 2-6-2Ts nos 5542 and 5553 worked the 9.15am Minehead to Dunster goods this morning as planned; no 5542 returning immediately to Minehead light engine. No 5553 remained at Dunster on shunting duties and then reformed the train ready for a 11.40 return."

"No 5542 returned light engine to Dunster at 11.37 (in place of the rostered no 4160) and hauled the goods back to Minehead with no 5553 dead at the rear."

"The first of today's three Minehead-Blue Anchor shuttles provided no 5553 with her first solo worked passenger train in preservation."

"History was made at 3.58pm as no 5542 departed from Minehead with the final shuttle of the day. Lots of beaming faces on the footplate and in the front coach, as she eased the six vehicles up the line. Highlight of the day, for sure.  Latest on the two "new" 55xx locos The Railway has given an update on the expected duties for GWR 2-6-2T nos 5542 and 5553 during the Autumn Gala Weekend 6-9 September.

No 5553 is in steamable condition but not released to general traffic following overhaul. Likely to work Dunster Goods and Blue Anchor services on Friday, possibly double heading with 5542. Minehead pilot Saturday. Dunster Goods Sunday. This loco has had several service trips, coupled with "Dinmore Manor".

No 5542 is also in steamable condition but not yet released to general traffic following overhaul. Possibly shunting in Washford yard on any of the three days or double heading Blue Anchor shuttles Friday. Dunster Goods Saturday. Minehead pilot Sunday. This loco was moved to Minehead on 5 September, and tested under load from there to Blue Anchor and back.

As an aside, the "Norton" shuttles will be worked by a DMU, given the uncertainty over steam availability.

There are likely to be eight locos in steam over the weekend.

Running-in turns for GWR no 5553 The 30th day of August turned out to be quite a momentous day for the two "Small Prairies" on the line for in addition to the good news about no 5542, sister loco no 5553 - recently restored to working order at Tyseley - worked the 10.15am departure, in the company of BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820 "Dinmore Manor". The Prairie was detached at Williton as a precaution, having developed a warm axlebox, and was attached to the down DMU for the run back to Minehead.  Odney Manor stopped The WSRA web site report, "After several years sterling work on the WSR – it entered service in May 1995 – no 7828 "Odney Manor" has had to be withdrawn due to a boiler defect. The ‘Manor’ was stopped at Minehead on 19 August due to a fire tube blowing at the joint with the firebox tubeplate.  ex-GWR Siphon restored Don Bishops writes, "I am pleased to be able to announce that the GWR Syphon G van No. 2980, owned by the GWR 813 fund and based on the WSR, has been restored over the last 8 months by a small team of volunteers led by Phil Cox and Don Bishop.

The body has had much timber work carried out and a number of coats of paint have been applied - GWR Brown. The chassis has now been painted Black and the running gear checked and oiled and all axleboxes removed cleaned and re-oiled. The vacuum system is currently undergoing some repairs and providing this is successful and no further work is required the vehicle may see service at the Autumn gala. However if further work is required on the brake system then this will be carried out before the vehicle is outshopped during the Autumn.

The work has been carried out firstly at Bishops Lydeard station last winter and following this inside the Tarmac shed at Williton. When outshopped, it is hoped to bring in some more smaller wagons from our fleet and repaint and repair these as required to enable the railway to once again be able to put out a reasonable looking goods train for special events etc.

Anyone interested in getting involved please contact me via BL station or on 01823 253566."

This is due to the guest speakers coming down from Birmingham that evening, the guests are Karl Jauncey and Dave Richards of Preserved Steam on Video who produce the two well known "annual" videos of Mainline steam. This show will be well worth seeing if you like to see and hear steam locos working hard on mainline tours - put it in your diary.

New Box for lifelong Signalman... After training and successfully passing his exams for the operation of the signal box at Blue Anchor last Friday, a new signalman was welcomed to the WSR 'family'on the following Saturday.

Signalboxes and their operations are nothing new to this signalman, even though trains on the Wizzer run at slower speeds than he was used to in his BR days. Not was he just a signalman on BR in the Oxfordshire areas, he has also written many successful books in his time about the subject and his life and times as a signalman.

I think we should all be pleased and proud to have none other than Mr Adrian Vaughan as one of our Blue Anchor signalmen!

Coaching news... At Bishops Lydeard, to overcome the effects of the bright sunlight fading the paintwork to the stock, some remedial action has been taking place on the 'Quantock Belle' dining train stock. From cantrail height down to the waistline, a new coat of paint has been applied.

Meanwhile at Minehead's extensive Carriage Shops, ex-British Rail Tourist Second Open (TSO) coach no 4909 is undergoing repair work following collision damage suffered in a heavy shunt at Bounds Green depot prior to the sale to the WSR. Much of the steelwork to the ends and the flooring has been replaced or renewed. The interior fixtures have all been cleaned and refitted. The coach will be repainted by hand to obtain the standard WSR high quality finish. Finally, replacement "Commonwealth" bogies, known to give passengers a smooth ride, will be fitted. It is expected that the TSO will not enter service until the late autumn of 2002, which give an insight into the amount of high quality work carried out by the Carriage Shops people, often out the gaze of staff and the public.

Extra Fish and Chip Special One of the outstanding successes of 2002, the "Fish and Chip" Specials, have proved so popular that the Railway is running an extra train to cope with demand. The additional run will be on 24 September. Originally all "Chippie" trains were to be formed of one of the Railway's Diesel Multiple Units, but it soon became clear that more seating was required and the trains are now loco-hauled sets of conventional coaches. For more information, see the Fish and Chip Specials page.

Unique Railway Exhibition at Minehead Station WSR's OnLine reports, "A unique Railway Art Exhibition will open on Minehead Station on Tuesday 3 September and run until Monday 16 September inclusive. The exhibition features the work of the Watchet artist Alan Ward. The West Somerset Railway provides Alan with a rich vein of subject matter allowing him to portray in microcosm the people, places, events and motive power that go up to make up the country’s premier heritage railway. This exhibition is unique in every sense of the word. It is the first major exhibition to be staged at Minehead Station and it will be the first to be held in 'Lorna Doone', one of the saloons adapted for the transportation of wheelchairs. The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm daily and Alan will be present for most of the time to discuss the works."

Alan was, of course, very involved in the 2002 Timetable Leaflet.

Small Prairies nos 5542 and 5553 for Gala The WSRA Web Site reports, "No less than two ex-GWR 55xx 2-6-2Ts will be in WSR passenger service for the first time at the Autumn Steam Gala on 6-8 September. No 5542 – which has been based on the Railway since being rescued from Barry scrapyard in 1975 – was lit-up for the first time for 41 years on Sunday 7 July, as its restoration nears completion. The boiler passed its steam test with flying colours on 10 July. Running-in is now imminent.

Meanwhile, No 5553 – also nearing completion of its restoration from scrapyard condition – will also be starring at the Autumn Gala. Another member of the Waterman Railways fleet, the ‘small prairie’ – the very last engine to be rescued from Barry scrapyard – is currently at Tyseley, and is expected to move directly from there to the WSR."

Minehead News Round-up On 10 August, the Hymek and coaching stock were used to cover the DMU diagram. There was nothing wrong with the DMU, and this was a planned change of motive power. Loaded with a mixture of Mk1 and TCL coaches, all in chocolate and cream livery bar the BSO no 9380 which is in maroon livery, the train typified the type used by BR running from London Paddington to Hereford in the late 1960's/early 1970's. The Hymek performed well all day and the sights and sounds of a Maybach humming away over the Quantocks was appreciated by all those who turned out to see her.

No 9380 Brake Second Open (BSO) is one of the new additions to the WSR coaching fleet, and runs in the maroon livery as delivered, and does not look out of place with standard chocolate and cream liveried stock. It was built at BR's Wolverton works in 1963 under lot number 30698. It runs on Commonwealth bogies which give a far superior ride compared with other types of bogie.

BR class 4MT 2-6-4T no 80136 is now back in service after having attention and repairs to both the cylinders and pistons. The piston rings required replacement on both sides. It is believed that the ingress of water into the cylinders caused the problem.

King Edward I at Minehead
Long trains weekend Saturday 3 August was quite notable by the appearance, late in the day, of two different twelve coach trains. The first was a Cheshire Railtours excursion from Leamington Spa, headed throughout by Class 47 no 47732 "Restormel", the train almost exclusively made up of the old BR corporate "blue and grey" livery. The special ran through to Minehead and was berthed in the Bay platform. When the locomotive was re-attached for the return journey, the train length extended beyond the Bay Starter.

Later that day, the 7.15pm "Somerset Coast Express" ran from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back, the demand for seats so great that twelve coaches were provided, and hauled by visiting GWR "King" 4-6-0 no 6024 "King Edward I" - ably driven by senior driver Richard Jones.

Only slightly outdone by the two Saturday trains, was the 4.45pm from Minehead on Sunday 4 August, loaded to eleven coaches - the standard seven coach service train and the four coach "Quantock Belle" set - and hauled in grand style by resident locos, nos 7820 and 4160.

Incident at Cogload It was the kind of incident you read about but, thankfully, rarely see. As the Minehead-bound excursion, headed by GWR 4-6-0 no 6024 "King Edward I" passed under Cogload flyover at speed, a mindless person stepped out onto the Up Bristol line to take a photograph. No hi-visibility jacket was worn by this person, not that it would have prevented a tragedy given his complete indifference to the need for safety.

It must have worried the driver of the steam special to have someone step out onto the tracks in front of his train.

We include two pictures, including a close up, to illustrate this sensless act. Such stupidity is not only downright dangerous for the individual, but can jeopardise the otherwise blemish-free running of such specials. Maybe someone can identify the trespasser - perhaps those on the train were running videos or taking pictures at the time? If you have any information, please email Brian Garrett.

Thanks to Steve Thompson, and Brian Garrett of Taunton Trains, for the image.

"Knowle" visit is called off An autumn visit by one of a class of the smallest engines used on the British main lines, ex-LBSCR 0-6-0T no 32678 "Knowle", has been called off. The loco - destined to become the first "Terrier" to work on the West Somerset - has been reported ashaving developed firebox problems at its home base, the Kent and East Sussex Railway.  More woes for the Signal & Telegraph Department On Friday 26 July at Blue Anchor, the first problem for the "bobbie" was the failure of the electric motor on the points at the Taunton end of the station. This meant the points had to be manually wound over by hand - no mean task, twice every time trains approached; once to set the road from Blue Anchor, then to set the road for the train from Minehead.

To add insult to injury, the signalman had great difficulty operating the gates on the crossing.Three of the gates moved freely but the fourth stuck at forty-five degrees across the road. Further inspection by the Signal Engineer revealed that the soft tarmac covering the road section of the crossing had become so weak and soft by the intense sunshine that it had started to sink. Some of the rodding that operates the gates had become broken or dislodged. Hand signalmen were deployed at the crossing and the signals. Digging up the road and repairing the rodding and associated parts, means a busy ahead for the Signal & Telegraph Gang

26 July 2002 Details from local correspondent

Update The WSR Signal Engineer reports "While it is true that at first we thought the road had collapsed, when it was dug up yesterday (Monday), we found that there was an accumulation of dirt and silt around the rodding in the duct. This, we assume, is as a result of many years of the rain washing the hillside down the main road and into a drain that runs along side the rodding duct. In the duct are rollers that carry the rodding to allow an easy movement of the gates. These were found to be covered in hard mud, the recent hot dry weather had harden what is normally soft mud."

"Two of the rollers where cleaned out during our work but there are two more that still needs further attention. This can only be carried out by closing half the road and operating single file traffic with "Stop/Go" boards. It can be appreciated that a number of staff are required to carry out this work, five would be about the minimum."

"The downside Minehead end gate still remains disconnected. While it moves better than it did on Friday, under test it was found that it is still possible for the gate to continue to jam. Further work will continue on this gate to clear the rodding ducts but in view of the heavy road usage this time of year, the peak timetable and the need for a number of S&T volunteers, such work will be limited."

Spring repairs
The Gang working at Blue Anchor Crossing earlier in 2002
Signal cables damaged near Minehead During the night of 17 and 18 July, person(s) unknown placed two signalling cables on the track between signal 7 (Up Starting) and signal 27 (Down Home) at Minehead. The cables were placed inside the "four-foot" over a length of about 20 feet. Next day, the first train to use the line, the 1015 ex-Minehead, sliced both cables in two places. The cables involved were a 10 pair, carrying signalling and indication circuits for signal 7, 27, the Down Distant and the telephone for signal 27, and a two core cable carrying the 110 volt AC power supply for these signals. After the cables had been cut, the 110 volt AC power cable was still live and touching one of the rails, thus making the rail live. This could have been dangerous to any person touching the rail.

Both signals were out of action due to this and as the telephone at 27 was also out of order, a modified form of working had to be introduced. The S&T Department were able to bring signal 7 back into use on Friday 19 July by temporary modifications to the circuits and the telephone for signal 27 was restored by using army field telephone cable.

An assessment of the situation showed that the cables appeared to have been placed so that there was not enough to re-join the pieces, this does indicate a certain amount thought on the part of the person(s) who carried out this act. The S&T Department were required to install 50 metres of new cable for the signalling circuits, together with a new termination box. There was also 10 metres of new power cable required. Three members of the S&T Department were on site all day on Sunday 21 July to install this. To convey the cable to site, the service of a locomotive, hauling the S&T cable coach with driver and guard were also required. Two other members of the S&T staff were required during the day at the S&T workshop coach to cut the new cable and prepare the new termination box.

In total, this was about 60 man-hours plus the cost of cable, termination box and locomotive fuel. It was, as someone commented, "A lot of work to get back to the same position that we were in last Wednesday".

Curtains for no 5224... No, not quite what it seems, thank goodness! Just that Pete Waterman's GWR 2-8-0T no 5224 was noted at Minehead alongside the shed with curtain material covering the door opening and side window area!  GWR 2-8-0T no 5224 arrives The expected summer visitor arrived at the WSR on Friday 12 July on a lowloader. The journey to the WSR was delayed somewhat because of a road accident at Staplegrove, and the police would not allow the lowloader to use this route until the road had been completely cleared. Instead, the lowloader was parked up in TN for two hours and traffic chaos built up around it!

After unloading in Bishops Lydeard yard, no 5224 was inspected by the Railway's resident locomotive inspector, who announced it was not to run until it had received a boiler washout and other minor faults rectified. The owners have been notified and are reported to be sending specialists to rectify the faults.

The locomotive is now on shed at Minehead awaiting repairs.

A Sodor Journalist reports... On the Sunday, every train that left Bishops Lydeard was full up to capacity - well bust my buffers!

"Duck" had to be assisted by BoBo (BoCo's cousin) because the train was loaded to seven coaches and it was felt that this would be easier on the gradients.

"Daisy" the Diesel railcar was strengthened by the fitting of Daphne. Basically, it was the 115 unit from the WSR fleet, with the Territorial Army's green 117 power car attached to the front end. This was done because of the amount of people who were travelling. The 117 power car was not powered - maybe it should of been called an unpowered power car! due to a technical problem. But the whole unit was worked in multiple, that is, the driver driving from the 117 unit and working the engines on the 115 unit. Your correspondent, being the guard on this one, had the easier time of it compared with the poor TTI. He had to keep hopping off at stations and moving from the 115 unit to the 117 car due the lack of corridor connection between the two! All the passengers who rushed to sit in the 117 leading car at Lydeard in their haste overlooked the fact that once in, here this is where they stayed! They could only visit the loo and the buffet in the 115 unit at long station stops! Luckily, there were a few of these due to late running and we had to wait to cross other trains.

Washford did a roaring trade with all the small people visiting "Percy" shunting the troublesome trucks, and the shunting events went on all day until about 4.30pm. See "Percy" in action on the SDRT website at www.sdrt.org.uk/sd_news_june2.htm.

At Minehead, the platform was full of folk viewing the stalls and stands, and Mrs Kindley was rushed off her feet in the buffet selling pop and buns to many a weary traveller. The Railway's Managing Director doubled up as the events announcer and sports presenter because he was giving out the footie results as they came in. An almighty cheer went up when he announced the final score, 2-0 to the boys from Brazil - guess there were no Germans around at the time...

The rain held off until mid afternoon, when most folk had enjoyed themselves to capacity, and the small people were very tired, so many trekked home a bit earlier than planned. All in all, another successful day on the Wizzer. Busy, but enjoyable!

This year, the special services will be formed of a rake of stock from Riviera Trains, top-n-tailed by EWS Class 47 diesel locomotives. More details can be found at the TAUNTONTRAINS web site. It seems the stock – and at least one of the locomotives – is expected to be stabled at Bishops Lydeard overnight each day. But no, it isn't part of a cunning plan to extend the West Somerset over the moors to Glaston...

More... Class 47s nos 47749 'Atlantic College' and 47789 'Lindisfarne' will top and tail seven InterCity coaches on the Taunton-Castle Cary-Westbury shuttles. The stock and one loco will be stabled at Bishops Lydeard overnight. On Thursday 27 June, train times on the WSR are expected to be 6.40am Bishops Lydeard to Westbury, 7.50pm Westbury to Bishops Lydeard (arrive 8.46pm) , followed by a light engine movement at 10pm for Bristol Barton Hill. The next day, the train will leave Bishops Lydeard for Westbury at 6.40am. Nice to see the WSR being used for such "real" trains...

And more... see the NEWSPIX pages for pictures of the first train passing onto the West Somerset at dusk on 26 June

Class 52 D1010 "Western Campaigner" Class 52 diesel-hydraulic no D1010 "Western Campaigner" has been confined to the sick bay at Williton Diesel Depot with heat exchanger problems. This will put the "Western" out of commission for a while and it wil not therefore be operating as planned on the West Somerset Railway on 13 and 14 July. Hymek Class 35 D7017 will substitute.

Diesel and Electric Group Secretary John Cronin expects that D1010 will be ready to return to action by 14 and 15 September. That weekend is that of the Campaign For Real Ale Somerset Branch's Beer Festival at Minehead Station where one of the beers on offer will be a special produced by Moor Brewery of Ashcott to mark the 40th Anniversary of the introduction of the Westerns. The advertising material for the beer will feature D1010.

Diesel shunter promoted to top link A local correspondent reports, "The loco, allocated for the 'Quantock Belle' dining train on Sunday 9 June, BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7828 'Odney Manor', was unable to create enough vacuum to release the brakes prior to departure at Bishops Lydeard. After some deliberation, it was decided to attach the Bishops Lydeard pilot loco, class 08 diesel shunter D3462, in front of the Manor to create the brake, as illustrated (right). The formation then proceeded to Williton - at a maximum speed of 15mph - where the class 08 was removed. This is thought to be the loco's first revenue earning passenger working on the Railway. It was replaced at Williton by BR class 33 'Crompton' no D6566. Whilst the pilots were swopped, the fault on no 7828 was fixed, but as insurance, the '33' remained as pilot for the remainder of the run to Minehead. The 'Manor' was again inspected, deemed fit and worked the return 'QB' without further incident. The '33' worked back to Bishops Lydeard on a later up train, double heading with BR class 4MT no 80136."

More details on GWR 2-6-2T no 5542 restoration Large steps towards the return to steam of 5542 have been made in the past few days. All the large bore copper pipework that has to be made in situ has been produced by a specialist pipe bender and is now being connected to that previously produced as standard pieces. This is now very serious progress, the cab almost resembles a working loco. The remaining work should now be completed within a few weeks.

GWR 0-6-0PT no 5786 to play"Duck" Visit called off - see story above. Subject to final confirmation, the ex-Great Western Railway pannier tank, no 5786, normally based at the South Devon Railway, will visit the line at the end of June in the guise of "Duck" during the "Days Out with Thomas" weekend of 29 and 30 June. The locomotive will haul trains between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead and back and will, no doubt, prove to be a Really Useful Engine. Other visitors for the "Thomas" weekend include "Thomas" himself (from the Severn Valley Railway), and "Ben", a diminuitive 0-4-0ST from the Bodwin and Wenford Railway in Cornwall.

Hymek D7017 to head the Fish and Chip Special... This weekend, 8 and 9 June, the Diesel & Electric Preservation Group owned diesel-hydraulic "Hymek" D7017, which once powered express trains from London to the West, will be used on the trains marked in the timetable as "diesel" - usually covered by one of the Railway's diesel multiple units. D7017 gets an extra duty on Saturday, when it heads the "Fish and Chip Special" from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back. "Hydraulic" fans are in for a treat!

The Golden Mile The Railway is once again supporting St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice with their fund raising which this year has the theme of “The Golden Mile”. Noticing that a £1 coin is one inch in diameter the Hospice are aiming to raise £63,360 (equivalent in value to a mile of the coins) in June and on 20 June collectors from the Hospice will be riding the trains and selling yellow ribbons. The steam trains on that date will sport suitable headboards and in the lead-up to the day posters will be displayed at the stations along the line

Minehead Station Gardens Minehead Station gardens, at around three acres, are outstandingly the largest on the railway and suffer from being in the town centre (litter and vandalism) and on the sea front (salt in the air). The gardens can be divided into three distinct aspects.

First there are the formal flower beds on the platforms, alongside the refreshment coach and bordering the car park outside the storage sheds and portakabin offices. All these beds are dug into paved areas with hard-core below the surfacing, as all have been created where none existed before. Planting has to take into account the limited funds and manpower available for maintenance and the poor soil, litter, trampling and soiling by dogs.

Secondly there are the seasonal hanging baskets and tubs which have won awards from the Minehead in Bloom judges and general acclamation the general public. The baskets need constant attention during the season as they dry out very quickly and take frequent battering in the sea breezes.

Finally there is the strip of land which stretches from the main station building alongside the sidings and running line as far as Seaward Way level crossing.

Although this latter part of the garden is only glimpsed from a train a public footpath runs the full length so it receives close scrutiny by the many local residents who use the path regularly and by hordes of holidaymakers. This area is managed specifically to encourage wild flowers and over 130 species have been recorded. This policy also benefits wild birds and animals. We have blackbirds, mallard, robins and sparrows nesting and all the common town garden birds regularly visiting. We have seen black redstarts, goldfinches and greenfinches, a kestrel regularly hawks overhead and many seabirds fly over. Badger, fox, otter (yes! otter) and rabbit all visit and large numbers of mice, shrews and voles live there. Butterflies, grasshoppers and other insects abound. Sticklebacks live in the ditch and there are three colonies of slow worms.

It was the "wild" area which was chosen to feature in Minehead's international Nations in Bloom competition in 2002. Minehead won second place in the Small Town category, and the three volunteers who are the regular gardening team are proud of the part they played in this achievement.

Wildlife Special Report Despite gloomy weather the Minehead "Wildlife Safari" on Monday evening was a huge success.

Using the 'new' green DMU fitted with a PA system, David Bailey gave a lively and informative commentary from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and back, fortified by copious quantities of liquid refreshment from the buffet.

Roe deer, two foxes, a hare and innumerable rabbits, buzzard, heron, canada geese, swans, green woodpecker, jay and many more mundane birds, 36 species of flowering plant including early purple and twayblade orchids; some uncommon ferns and liverworts, many trees including some flowering cherry and walnut; and a 'Danger, Adder' sign erected by the WSRA Special Projects Group at Stogumber were observed on the journey.

Seventy plus passengers, including several local residents who had never travelled on the line before! All thoroughly enjoyed the experience and thus created a very happy atmosphere that permeated the whole train.

Taking three and a half hours to complete the round trip everyone had ample opportunity to see all that was pointed out in the commentary and appreciate the views of this startlingly beautiful part of the country in all it's late Spring glory.

Great amusement was caused when an unscheduled stop was explained as "The Driver is mending his spectacles".

Altogether a great success. Everyone is asking when the next one will run. More details.

Cutting Back Report As presaged in an earlier report the Gang met at Stogumber over the weekend of 18 and 19 May and rebuilt the path from the Station House down to the station car park, including the steps. The amount of civil engineering was greater than anticipated as the original steps were far too steep for practical use. Thus, instead of merely replacing them, a whole new deep cutting had to be dug into the bank to achieve an acceptable "gradient". The additional spoil produced was useful in providing a wider hard shoulder for the new path cut into the hillside. Old sleepers were cut to provide facings to each riser on the steps and the steps and path were surfaced with loco ash - some four tonnes of the stuff, donated by the loco departmentsat MD and BL.

A lot of herbage had to be cut back to open up the route and some of the larger wood was recycled in manufacturing handrails and posts for the steps.

Sundry other smaller jobs were also completed.

During the course of the weekend the Gang uncovered, and hastily recovered, one adder, one toad and three slow worms.

The Cutting Back Gang always work carefully to enhance the enhance the attractions of railway property for wildlife but after the encounter with the adder will work even more carefully! (for nature buffs it was a female adder and was probably pregnant, otherwise it would have been out enjoying the sunshine.)

Altrincham-Minehead Charter - an eventful day The charter from Altrincham to Minehead on 18 May had an eventful time. The train started out fine, and left Shrewsbury on time at 9.03am behind Class 47 no 47725, but stopped at milepost 173 north of Bridgwater, with a small fire in the traction motor of the "47" possibly caused by an oil leak. The fire was quickly put out, but the locomotive was unable to continue. The rescue engine, Class 47 no 47733 "Eastern Star", was summoned from Exeter, and it hauled the failed loco and the thirteen coaches to Taunton, where no 47725 has left in a siding. "Eastern Star" then took the train onto Minehead where it arrived around 105 minutes late. No 47733 was in fact making a return visit to Minehead, as it had, some years ago, become the first of the class to reach the seaside town during trials of Post Office driving trailer vehicles. On the return, problems with no 47733 itself created an unscheduled visit to the loco compound for coolant top-up. At Bristol, the "47" was replaced by no 67008 for the remainder of the return trip. One passenger who did the trip from Shrewsbury and back, adds "...having left Bristol some 90 minutes late, no 67008 made a spirited run to Shrewsbury and recovered about 15 minutes of the schedule. We arrived back in Altrincham at about 00.40, some 75 minutes late. Passengers appeared to take the whole thing philosophically. I suspect that most of them were simply out for the day - the lack of heads out of windows would indicate that they weren't railway enthusiasts!"

Fish and Chip Special is loco-hauled... Contrary to earlier suggestions of a DMU being used, the "Fish and Chip Special" on the evening of Saturday 11 May, was formed of six coaches headed by ex-mainline Class 33 'Crompton' no 33048, to the delight of visiting enthusiasts and photographers. An official reason is still awaited but it is likely due the lack of tables in the DMU which are plentiful in the coaching stock. Being fully booked, the limited capacity of the 3-car DMU may also be a factor. Rumour also has it that future "Chippie" specials will also be loco-hauled. The "Chippie" is seen [right] at Williton en route to Minehead on the outward journey.

West Country Railway Artists Exhibition Frederick Lea writes, "A group of ten artists, known collectively as the 'West Country Railway Artists', have mounted an exhibition of their work in the Gauge Museum Gallery at Bishops Lydeard Station. Around 40 paintings are on display, some of which have a local flavour, by such well-known painters as Simon Bowditch, Peter Barnfield, John Hughes, Bernard Jones and Frederick Lea. Most, if not all, these paintings are available for purchase.

The Exhibition is now open to the public and will run through the summer months until 8 September 2002.

There was a publicity meeting on Friday 26 April at Bishops Lydeard and a slot was recorded for the local Taunton TV channel. This is scheduled to be broadcast in their 'Whats on' programme on Tuesday 30 April. The local press also turned out.

The group is indebted to Norman Hawkes and the staff at Bishops Lydeard for their help in staging this show."

Cutting Back Weekend The Working Party will be at Stogumber this weekend (18, 19 May) and being May will refrain from too much vegetation destruction whilst the birds nesting. Instead the Group will be tidying the footpath between Station House and the Station car park, trimming back shubbery and redigging the path including the steps down to the car park. Also, the bank behind the station will be tidied. Other tasks include covering an open drain, patching the tarmac and clearing the worst of the undergrowth. If time permits, the underbridge immediately on the Minehead side of the station (Quarkhill Bridge) will be cleared of vegetation.

On Sunday lunchtime, lunchtime barbeque is proposed - dependant on weather and our fire raisers - feel free to bring other family members and some suitable food.

Washford News The little Peckett 0-4-0ST "Kilmersdon" aka "Mike Palmer" is back in steam around the Washford Sidings. The loco now, for the first time, and no doubt to the delight of photographers, faces Paddington.

The Peckett was used to haul nearly-restored GWR "Small Prairie" 2-6-2T no 5542 during stock re-positioning recently.

No 5542 is awaiting "skilled attention to pipework and paint finish", so it sounds like the return to traffic is not so far away now.

A relic from the agricultural steam age has been rescued from a nursery at Ellicombe, near Minehead, and is now on display at Washford. The portable steam engine, once a common sight around farms and used to power a variety of implements including the infamous threshing machine (take a bow, Adge - and how we miss you), was latterly used to provide hot water for the horticultural business, until recued by the "5542 Group" and brought to Washford.

10.15am Minehead to Bishops Lydeard (double-headed)
12.25pm Bishops Lydeard to Minehead
2.25pm Minehead to Bishops Lydeard
4.05pm Bishops Lydeard to Minehead

Diesel News Class 14 no D9526 may not be everyone's favourite, but good news indeed from Williton with the successful installation of the Paxman engine on 20 March. The renovation is now into the fifth year. When completed, the diesel-hydraulic maid-of-all-work will provide a most useful utility locomitive for the Railway.

Hymek D7017 was "fired-up" recently, and also provided a load test for Class 33 no 33048 on a trip to Blue Anchor and back.

The Western no D1010 is also being rebuilt with a view to service-running this summer.

And today, Crompton no 33 048 and Class 25 no D7523 were succesfully worked in multiple today for the first time, previous attempts having been unsuccesful. Test running was conducted within station limits at Williton. As a result, the two locos may now double-head working in multiple during the "Anything Goes" weekend during May, only requiring one driver to control both.

In the meantime, the Crompton is scheduled to operate the timetabled DMU diagram over the weekend of 13 & 14 April.

This will allow trains to run at up to 55 miles per hour on this, mostly straight, part of the Norton section. The Railway do not expect any passenger trains to exceed the normal 25mph limit, nor is there any suggestion that the Railway will increase the present limit. The idea behind the Norton upgrade is to allow other Train Operating Companies to undertake crew trainingand testing of stock on the WSR. Much work has been done by the Railway's permanent way gangs, involving improved sight lines, improving the ballast profile and ensuring secure fencing throughout that section. More details can be found in the WSR Journal. More maps.

CAMRA Weekend Hertfordshire Railtours have announced more details of their Minehead Merrymaker excursion on 14 September. This is an excellent and cost-effective way of getting to Minehead for the CAMRA Real Ale Event...

"On the day of our visit the WSR is holding a Steam and Real Ale Event, in conjunction with CAMRA, with an intensive steam train service running and numerous guest ales on sale to quench the thirst. We received so much favourable comment about this event last year that we simply had to do it again!

"The Merrymaker train will run right through to Minehead, giving a break at the resort of over three hours. In addition you can travel on the WSR Steam trains at half price, so you have total flexibility at minimum cost. We will provide you with timetable details on the day to enable you to plan your afternoon as you wish. The Merrymaker will call also at Bishops Lydeard and Dunster in both directions, widening your options still further.

"Classic buses will operate, free of charge, between Dunster station and the highly picturesque Dunster Village, notable for its castle, parts of which date from the 13th Century, and 18th Century working waterwheel.

Pannier problems and solutions The non-appearance at the recent Spring Steam Gala of WSRA-owned GWR 0-6-0PT no 6412 was due to the discovery during routine examinations of small cracks in the firebox in the area of the foundation ring. Repairs have been effected and the loco is being re-assembled. The disappointment of the failure of the popular locomotive was more than offset by the rapid hire of BR(W) 0-6-0PT no 1501 from the Severn Valley Railway, the first appearance of this later design of the much-loved GWR pannier tank type on the Railway.

More coaches arrive Three more coaches have arrived to bolster the coaching stock. Two Tourist Second Open (TSO) vehicles - nos 5025 & 5030 - have been purchased privately from Riviera Trains for use on the line. Both carry BR Western Region chocolate and cream livery and will enter service immediately. Meanwhile, the WSR plc has purchased Brake Second Open (BSO) no 9380 (pictured), which previously formed part of the now-disbanded “Berwyn Belle” dining train on the Llangollen Railway. The BSO has been moved to Minehead, and is now in the Carriage Works where it will lose its royal blue livery in favour of the locally-preferred traditional chocolate and cream. The arrival of the two TSOs - together with other recent coach arrivals - means the WSR can now muster a rake of six dual-braked Mark 1 vehicles (TSO Nos 4875, 4876, 4909, 5025, 5030 & BSK No 35451), which opens-up new commercial possibilities.

Blue Coach
Spring Gala success Whilst trains generally ran around twenty minutes late on Saturday and Sunday, they were comfortably full. In fact, over 4800 passengers were carries during the three day event on 22-24 March. This is less than the record for this event chalked up in 2001, but over 5% more than 2000.
