Silk Mill Bridge - announcement soon
The long-mooted plan to replace the level crossing at Silk Mill with a bridge will move another step closer to reality with an imminent announcement which could see construction starting in 2004. The bridge has become necessary due to the upgrading of the old winding Silk Mill Lane into a major arterial local road. Most people using the road nowadays do not appreciate the history of the area, and are puzzled by the presence of the crossing over what is now a very busy road.

It appears current plans will see the bridge having an additional span to preserve the right of way of the disused Grand Western Canal, which may at some future time be restored. The course of the canal can just be traced to the immediate south of the crossing.

The bridge will also span the route of the old up slow line and preserve a future reinstated independent route from the WSR to Taunton.

Tidy Train weekend success The WSRA web site reports "The Railway's annual 'Tidy Train' was held over the weekend of 17-18 November and was a tremendous success. Around 30-35 volunteers attended on both days. The special steam hauled works train was hauled by No 7828 Odney Manor. Over the course of the two days, several tons of logs, scrap chairs and a lot of rubbish was cleared from the WSR lineside. The WSRA is extremely grateful to everyone who attended. It is anticipated that a further Tidy Train will run in March prior to the start of the 2002 season."

Wildlife Special success The WIldlife Special DMU ran on the evening of 14 July with 117 passengers - near to capacity! David Bailey led the "safari", slowing to a mere 2mph at such exotic places as Sampford Brett cutting to view the glow-worms - actually just the one obliged. All aboard seemed to enjoy this rather unique trip, and David thanks all involved for making the evening a success.

News from the Minehead Platform "Although the timetabled train services have stopped until 27th December, with the exception of the Santa Specials, Minehead Station Office is still busy taking Santa bookings as well as for Dunster by Candlight. The Dunster trains are all now full with the exception of the 17:15 extra steam train from Bishops Lydeard on the Friday evening, 7th December, on which only 13 seats remain. The Santa trains are also filling up fast so early booking is advised for those who have not yet done so."

"Meanwhile the Buffer Stop shop at Minehead is well stocked for the Christmas season and is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 till 15:30 for the purchase of books, models, videos and clothing among other things. Mike Chilcott will be pleased to help with choosing a Christmas Present and there is also a Mail Order List available on the Company web site."

Bus plans revealed for the Spring Steam Gala 2002 On all three days of the event, 22-24 there will an excursion over Exmoor using a Blue Motors motor coach which will follow the trackbed and remains of the former Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. The Lynton & Barnstaple Society will be supplying a guide for the outing.

Then, on Saturday 23 March, will be a road coach excursion from Bishops Lydeard, departing on arrival of the first "up" train, to Cribbs Causeway shopping centre in Bristol, returning in time for the last "down" train. The coach for this excursion will be a non-vintage one from Berry's Coaches.

Road improvements seem unlikely in near future... Local businesses have expressed disappointment at the news that the proposed improvements to the A39 and A358 have been relegated to fourth place in the local priority table. This means the road will not be built for the foreseeable. Improved road connections between West Somerset and the M5 is seen as critical to enhanced commerce in the area. Perhaps the Railway could help by reviving through freight and passenger services...

Several routes were proposed during the consultation, and one of the more likely options would have created two bridges over (at Williton and Bye Farm) and one under (near Black Monkey) the West Somerset Railway, no doubt creating both disruption to train services and possible freight traffic during construction. Not to mention some new vantage points for photographers!

The Long Walks... Readers may be interested to learn that the West Somerset Railway is "walked " by members of staff at least once a week. For "linewalking" purposes, the line is divided into five sections, Minehead - Washford - Williton - Crowcombe Heathfield - Bishops Lydeard - Norton Fitzwarren.

Each of the first four sections is walked in one direction one week and the other the next and so on. A different person does a different section each week. Any faults found are dealt with as soon as possible after the walk.

The less-used Norton Fitzwarren section is walked as required.

TA DMU refurbishment moves inside Following the external repaint of DMBS no 51352 in to"Whisker Green" the interior has received attention.

The brakevan/luggage area has been cleaned up and the doorway through to the passenger area has been made double width to allow the passage of wheelchairs. In the saloon area one row of seats adjacent to the bulkhead has been removed to provide the space for a wheelchair.

Deepcleaning has taken place throughout the saloon.

In the driving cab, the whole area has been cleaned and the desk has been repainted a blue colour with the controls and dials receiving a coat of silver around the edges.

It was hoped that the DMBS was to have taken part in the recent 1960's weekend but due to pressure of work in other areas it did not appear. However, when manpower allows, and all the other finishing off jobs are complete, we should see a green DMBS running on the line soon.

Details of Tidy Train due to run in November Volunteers are welcomed for the annual Tidy Train which will be out and about over the weekend of 17-18 November. Steam haulage has been requested in the shape of BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7828 "Odney Manor", which will steam to Williton on the first morning to join the throng at around 9am. The train will have been formed at Lydeard during the previous day and moved to Williton by diesel loco. The schedule for Saturday includes a visit to the Williton-Blue Anchor section, and lunch at Williton - a good chance for afternoon volunteers to join in - and a visit to Stogumber, and ending up at Lydeard before nightfall.

A "debriefing" at the Lethbridge Arms during the evening sounds interesting...

The Sunday will see the train and gang starting off from Lydeard at around 9 o'clock and then working in the Leigh loop area, again ending up at Lydeard at nightfall.

"Odney Manor" gets a dirty look The normally immaculate "Odney Manor", no 7828, will be given an unkempt, run-down look for the forthcoming Sixties Weekend. This is to reflect the general appearance of steam locos in the twilight years of steam power in Britain. The engine will be turned out with its name and number plates removed, its safety valve bonnet missing, and with a distinct lack of cleaniness - the practice of cleaning rapidly disappeared from steam sheds as steam faced the end. Looks like a unique opportunity for some rare time-warp photographs!

Sprinters may form a relief train for Dunster by Candlelight event The WSR report that the special trains for the Dunster by Candlelight event on 7 and 8 December 2001 are doing a roaring trade. The October OnLine reveals:

"Business for the Dunster By Candlelight Weekend continues to be very good indeed. The Cheshire Railtours HST from Bristol on the Saturday is a sell-out and as a result they are planning a relief service utilising two "Sprinter" units (which would be the first working on to the WSR by this type of train). Our own Saturday Steam train is a sell-out, as is the Saturday Diner. On Friday night our steam service is over 60% full.

"As for Pathfinder's Friday excursion from Crewe behind the first Class 56 to Minehead, bookings had topped the 200 mark in mid-September."

Rare mileage opportunities during Sixties Weekend The DMU will be running the shuttle service on both the Saturday AND the Sunday, even though the Sunday workings are NOT shown in the public timetable.

If you have never been down the little traversed Norton Fitzwarren section, this will be the last chance this year to do so.

The journey takes about 10 minutes to get from BL to NF where the train will stop inside the boundary between the WSR and Railtrack, the Great Western mainline is a short distance away.

The train will wait here for a while but passengers are NOT permitted to alight, the train then travels back to BL.

News about the Tidy Train and Cutting Back A revised Tidy Train will be run on Saturday and Sunday 17,18 November. This will follow the usual format and collect sleepers, chairs, logs etc from the lineside. The train should be steam hauled using Odney Manor subject to availability. Some assistance with marshalling the train on the Friday and emptying it on the Monday would be appreciated.

The exact details and timings will be finalised in the next few weeks but provisional timings will be a 9am start to make the most of the shorter days in November.

The next Cutting Back session will take place on 13,14 October at Tribble Bridge (Combe Florey). Road parking adjacent to the bridge may be arranged.

There will be NO cutting back in November due to the Tidy train. On 8, 9 December, cutting back will be at Watchet station.

All hands welcome on all dates!

Harold Blackmore Harold Blackmore has died at the age of 91. Harold was there at the very rebirth of the Railway in the 1970s and was in charge of the Permanent Way during the momentous days of the Re-Openings. He masterminded the renewal and upgrade of the entire twenty-three miles of track and trackbed.

I can recall the ease with which Harold could bar over rails - others would struggle yet he would first lift his cap, and then jab in the crowbar under the metals and then seemingly without effort, slide the rail over.

Before he joined the Somerset, he was long-time on the Western permanent way and clearly brought hard-earned skills to great effect which we all enjoy today.

Gala figures reveal a successful weekend The Railway report a 16.5% increase in passengers over last year, showing the weekend has been a great success all round. Another pleasing statistic is that advance bookings went up by a whacking 56%.

Major award for the WSR Journal The West Somerset Railway JOURNAL, the line's house magazine, has been awarded first place in the Heritage Railway Association's bi-annual National Publications Competition.

The Award was colected on behalf of the West Somerset Railway Association by the Editor, David Williams, at the Heritage Railway Association's Autumn Meeting, held on this occasion in Tywyn (for the Talyllyn Railway) on 15 and 16 September 2001.

This is the second major trophy with which the magazine has been presented, as the Journal also won the D. Noel Draycott Award for "continued excellence" in 1997.

Both the Editor and the Railway would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Heritage Railway Association, and the judges, for honouring the Journal in this way.

Most lineside restrictions lifted from 4 August The Railway has announced the following (reproduced verbatum to ensure full understanding):

"PRECAUTIONS
Visitors are warned that some footpaths and farm and moorland remain closed and they should KEEP OUT. We are advised that the authorities will not hesitate to prosecute those who transgress (the Regulations permit fines of up to £ 5000).

RE-INTRODUCTION OF LINESIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
The restrictions imposed on holders of Lineside Photographic Permits to enter safe areas of the Railway's property for photographic purposes will be substantially lifted w.e.f. 4th August 2001.

Lineside Photographic Permit (LSP) Holders may enjoy all normal facilities except that entry to the Railway's land must be from a station.

LSP holders are respectfully requested to park cars only in station or public car parks, and not to park on verges or in farm gateways.

REMEMBER:
The WSR NEVER gives permission for anyone to enter private land. Farmers are naturally still very anxious about the foot and mouth epidemic, please respect their concerns and sensitivities.

We have advised the authorities of the arrangements we have made, and that we NEVER give permission for anyone to enter private land."

Comment: Please take careful note and adhere strongly to the above instructions which form part of the Lineside Photography Permit conditions.

Possibly, just possibly, new "firsts" on passenger haulage... Not to get too excited yet, but the Class 3 diesel D2133 may haul a passenger train for the first time ever during the Sixties Weekend in October. Also, and yet to be confirmed, a Class 56 may haul a Midlands to Minehead special on 7 December, in connection with the Dunster-by-Candlelight event, which will be a first for this class of locomotive. But watch this space as both events are provisional at this point in time.

Goods all round expected at Gala... The popular Goods Train run at the WSR Galas will see at least three and possibly four different locos up-front at various times- with GWR 0-6-0ST no 813 heading the list, and GWR 2-8-0T no 4247 and GWR 0-6-0PT no 9466 also expected to get a look in, along with 'Manor' 4-6-0 no 7820 'Dinmore Manor'. The little saddle tank, no 813, wil also feature on a short mixed train on a Minehead-Blue Anchor shuttle, and a photographic shoot on the Saturday evening. All these things are subject to availability of course - and full details of all trains, locos, stock and timings, in the special working timetable available at the stations over the weekend for a modest sum. One thing for sure, the line will see some very heavy traffic.

GWR 2-8-0T no 4247 gets a passenger turn... 4247. Photo by Alan Grieve The recently restored GWR 2-8-0T no 4247 enjoyed a passenger turn on the WSR on 11 September when she headed the 10.25 ex-Bishops Lydeard, the 12.15 departure from Minehead, and the 2.10 from Lydeard down to Minehead. After arrival at Minehead, the loco retired to the shed, no doubt for a careful examination - with the Autumn Gala looming and the heavy tank being one of the stars!

Four trains each way? Do not be fooled by the public timetable! The latest Journal notes the fact that the 2001 public timetable for May 18 to 20 shows no trains on the Friday, and a basic "blue" timetable - four trains each way - on the following Saturday and Sunday. But, over those three days, in addition to the scheduled trains, the Railway also saw Class 47 no 47726 arrive (late) on the Friday with a thirteen coach ECS from Crewe, which was hauled from Bishops Lydeard by Western D1010, which was, luckily, due to pilot the 47 for air brake tests.

Next morning, the same coaches left Minehead at 7am for London Paddington behind GWR 4-6-0 no 5029 "Nunney Castle". This train, the "Capital Castle" railtour, returned later that day with Class 67 no 67026, which became the first of the class to work right through to Minehead.

So, with all trains/movements, added to trainspotters' notebooks would be GWR 4-6-0 no 6024; GWR 4-6-0 no 5029; BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820; BR(W) 2-6-2T no 4160; Hymek D7017; Western D1010; Class 47 no 47726 and Class 67 no 67026. Not a bad haul for a basic timetable...

CAMRA at Minehead 2001 The Branch Secretary of Somerset Campaign for Real Ale reports
"I am delighted to report the WSR / CAMRA Real Ale Festival 2001 was a roaring success. We actually restocked some on Saturday evening giving us a total stock of almost 4,000 pints, including cask beer, cider, perry and bottled beer. This represented a 60 per cent increase in wet stock over last year and we still ran out earlier than in 2000!

"Staff and management from all departments at Minehead could not have been more helpful and accommodating, making the running of this event an absolute pleasure. Suitable donations from the festival proceeds will shortly be made to Friends of Minehead Station and Minehead RNLI Guild, CAMRA being a non-profit making organisation.

"I first proposed this event to both the WSR plc and Somerset CAMRA some three years ago. While, at the time, I thought it would be a good idea I did not dare to hope we would be so well established so soon. This happy situation is, I believe, entirely due to the excellent working relationship between the two organisations."

"We do it all again on 14th & 15th September 2002."

D1010 subs for D7017 this weekend The WSR have announced that, "Despite the overhaul efforts of the Williton based Diesel and Electric Group essential maintenance work on Class 35 "Hymek" D7017 will not be complete in time for it to be available to operate its scheduled trains on the WSR on August 26th and 27th. However fans of Western Region diesel hydraulic haulage will probably be satisfied with the substitute, which will be D1010 'Western Campaigner'"

The return service left Minehead bang on time at 4.45pm for the long run back to Hertfordshire.

Combe Florey PW hut is restored Just the kind of railway lineside feature that can remain unrestored, the ganger's hut at Combe Florey has been returning to nature since the closure of the line in 1971. Other more glamorous objects that belch smoke and steam tend to get more attention from the restorers.

But a small band of WSRA volunteers have taken this particular hut to heart and have, over the last year or so, restored the wooden hut to its former glory.

The hut sits in a lovely spot with a super view of Wills Neck on the Quantocks and also overlooking the Farmers Arms - the proximity of which is (apparently) a complete coincidence.

Class 66 heads through train on Saturday An English, Welsh and Scottish Railway Class 66 will head the through train from Letchworth to Minehead on Saturday 1 September. The train is due at Norton Junction around 11am.

Whilst at Minehead, the stock will be stabled in Platform One - all other loco-hauled trains running into Platform Two, with the Class 25 shunt-releasing the train engine. A busy afternoon for the crossing at Seaward Way and the Minehead Signalman.

The charter is due to depart from Minehead at 4.45pm, rejoining Railtrack around 6.15pm.

Mixed train to run during the Gala For the first time on the WSR, a "mixed" train will run on the Saturday and Sunday of the Autumn Steam Gala. Such trains were quite a feature of branch lines of the past, with a passenger coach or two coupled to a few wagons, presumably to save running a separate goods train. The mixed will be hauled by one of the guest engines. Needless to say, accommodation is very limited and must be pre-booked. A supplement boarding pass at £2 per person per single journey must be purchased beforehand. Sounds like quite a photographic opportunity.

Opportunity to work on the WSR as a Volunteer The WSR currently has vacancies for Travelling Ticket Inspectors (TTIs). This is a role which suits young or old - we have Junior Ticket Inspectors aged 14 and 15 with adult TTIs from 16 upwards - no attempt having been made to establish the oldest! It is also a role which lends itself to job sharing, between husband and wife for example, as dividing the train in two not only makes the day less tiring for the volunteer but ensures that a better service is given to the passengers.

And that is what the job is really all about; providing the highest possible level of care and attention to the needs of the passenger. As the title implies there is an important revenue protection element to the job, but more revenue is generated by creating the Goodwill that comes from good public relations than from catching the occasional dog without a ticket!

Depending on the timetable in operation duties last about 8 hours and do demand being on one’s feet all day, mostly on a moving train, so an element of physical fitness is needed. There is some lifting and cleaning involved. Training in safety, on the two types of ticket machine in use, in helping disabled passengers and in other aspects of the job is given by means of a new volunteer "shadowing" an old hand for several duties. Only when a new volunteer feels confident to go solo are they rostered to a duty on their own. At all times the Guard is in charge of the train so is available for guidance whenever necessary.

The one drawback to the job is that it is highly seasonal. Only two TTIs are needed per day during the low season but the requirement rises to five or more during the high season and Galas. Therefore all TTIs are encouraged to look around and select a second interest to pursue during the quieter months.

The system is very flexible and covers TTIs who work one day a week or one day a month, through to TTIs who live away from the area and come down for just a few days a year.

If you enjoy meeting people and would welcome an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the WSR as part of a hard working but friendly team, just give us a ring (01643 704996).

GWR saddle tank scales the heights to Crowcombe summit Whilst some observers wondered if GWR 0-6-0ST no 813 would actually reach the summit, the locomotive did indeed haul four trains on each day of the weekend of 4 and 5 August from Bishops Lydeard to Crowcombe Heathfield. The little loco had three coaches behind the drawbar on the Saturday, reduced to two coaches on the Sunday. Most trains seemed popular with passengers, and even more so with photographers.

News about the Scottie DMU The DMBS ( Driving, Motor, Brake, Second )of the TA's class 117 DMU has gone green! It is a form of early BR green with narrow yellow body side bands, one at waist level and one just below cantrail height. The front end below the cabwindows is adorned with Yellow "Cats Whiskers".

The DMS (Driving Motor Second) and the TCL still have yet to be painted in the same fashion. When the few remaining internal jobs on the DMBS are complete it will go into service on the WSR onto the WSR's own DMU.

Because the DMBS 51880 has a dodgy head gasket and other mechanical glitches it needs to come out of service for a while, so by putting the green DMBS into service will keep the DMU running.

This will lead to a Hybrid unit running on the WSR formed of class 117/115 DMU in two completely different liveries! (It now gets a bit complicated, but read on...)

The TA's TCL from their unit is going to be painted choc and cream to fit in with WSR MK1 stock. One of the WSR's TCL's ( Trailer, Composite, Lav ) going to be converted to have a mini buffet in it (like the existing one) thereby creating the second TCBL ( Trailer, Composite, Buffet, Lav ) on the WSR, BUT, this is going to be painted green to match the TA's DMBS!

The reason for this complicated state of affairs is because there is a need to have a buffet on every service train, and the TA were not keen on having their TCL converted but were happy to have it painted in a different livery! (I suppose if ever they take their unit away it means that it is still complete as built but just different colours!) So when all is done, there will be two DMU's available to run on the WSR, one in early BR green with whiskers, and one in red and cream ( called by some Stathclyde PTE colours!), and both with a mini buffet.

It is hoped the TA's/Scottie/Green (call it what you will!) DMU will be running as a complete unit on the forthcoming 1960's weekend.

"Knowle" will not return to Minehead this autumn after all Sadly, mechanical problems will prevent the LBSCR "Terrier" 0-6-0T no 32678 "Knowle" from visiting the Railway later this year. The loco was once at Minehead first at Butlins on static display, then at the Railway, on display again, sometimes intact sometimes in bits. The loco left for the South East where it was eventually restored to working order. Perhaps a visit later?

WSR convey VIPs to Watchet Marina opening The new marina at Watchet Harbour officially opened on Saturday 28 July, and VIPs travelled to the event in special coaches attached to the 10.25 departure from Bishops Lydeard.

Comment: The Railway has, from its inception, had an on/off relationship with the harbour at Watchet, and indeed, has been instrumental in improvements over the years since 1862. Whilst some current observers, including me, might still wish for a resumption of commercial traffic both sea and rail at Watchet, the new development as a leisure facility may, just, provide additional new passenger traffic potential for the Railway. Yachts arriving from inland boatyards by rail is not expected. Time and tide will tell...

[Apologies for the earlier report which mistakenly suggested the opening of the marina was to be on 4 August. A careless error by this web site and no-one else.]

WSR volunteers featured on HTV Volunteers from the Railway have featured in a documentary series made by HTV. Shown last Friday, the WSR at Bishops Lydeard formed the start, the middle and the end parts of the programme. The series highlights on the need for volunteers for a variety of organisations in the Somerset and Bristol area. There were interviews with the station staff, train crews and the WSRA chairman amongst others, all recorded about three weeks ago. HTV have created a factsheet specially for the Railway and this should be available on the HTV website.

Taunton TV, not to be outdone by their larger media neighbours up at Bristol, are due to film the vintage bus service during the Alternative Rally weekend on 4 and 5 August.

Small engines get a look in The Railway will host visits by a couple of smaller engines this summer. The unique GWR 0-6-0ST No. 813. The WSRA report "The loco will work shuttles between Bishops Lydeard and Crowcombe 4 times each day and possibly also some extra shuttles to Norton Fitzwarren on the Sunday only, this is not possible on the Saturday due to an incoming railtour. Fares will be £3.00 each return from BL to Crowcombe with all proceeds going direct to the WSRA to help cover the cost of bringing this unusual guest engine to the line."

The WSRA continue "Another small engine to visit the WSR in coming months is Terrier No. 32678 from the Kent & East Sussex Rly which will be at the WSR for the Autumn gala event 14th - 16th September and for the 1960's weekend 6th & 7th October 2001. This engine was based on the WSR for a short while in the 1970's following its removal from the Butlins Holiday camp in Minehead along with 46229 Duchess of Hamilton. A group of volunteers started restoration works but it soon became apparent that the engine was always going to be too small for the long and heavilly graded WSR and it was sold on to a private owner in Kent. Subsequently the engine was sold to the KESR based Terrier trust and restoration completed a couple of years ago. The engine now sports lined BR Black livery. For the September gala event the engine is expected to work a number of single coach shuttles between Minehead & Blue Anchor on Friday 14th September and a Minehead - Bishops Lydeard trip on the Saturday and Sunday mornings with shuttles on the Norton Fitzwarren section all day followed by a return run to Minehead. Details of its workings for the 1960's weekend have not yet been finalised, but a delightful appearance with a single Green Mk1 coach and two milk tanks should not be ruled out. "

Postscript: Alas due to mechanical problems, the Railway announced on 1 August that the Terrier would not be visiting the line after all...

Merrymaker excursion to Real Ale event in September Hertfordshire Railtours are running a Merrymaker from Letchworth to Minehead on 1 September 2001.  More on Bishops Lydeard re-signalling Over the last weekend, and for a couple of weekends to come, weather permitting, the S&T gang will be out and about at Bishops Lydeard. Two colour light signal posts were sunk over Saturday and Sunday last. The heads require aligning correctly with the track for sighting purposes, likewise the cables and ancillary equipment will have to be connected.

The first one is sited some 100 yards from Lydeard box on the Norton road and faces Taunton, the second is about half a mile in the rear of this one (near to the existing fixed distant), and also faces Taunton.

The last one (yet to be sunk) will be positioned at the stop board at Norton Junction, and will also face Taunton direction. This colour light will be interlocked between Bishops Lydeard box and Exeter MAS panel. However, Bishops Lydeard box will control the colour lights nearest to Lydeard.

"Lorna Doone" overhaul nears completion A local correspondent reports "...and outside the shed basking in the sunshine was the recently overhauled "Lorna Doone" coach. Painted in lined Chocolate and Cream livery it looks very smart. From what I could see, the coach has been repainted inside too."

"Outside it appears that the step boards by the guards and the luggage doors have yet to be refitted otherwise all is complete. The coach now sits on Commonwealth bogies (acquired from Booths at Rotherham) which should improve the ride quality."

The return of this special coach will further improve the travelling experience of our wheelchair-bound visitors.

"Dinmore Manor" plates to be auctioned One name-plate "Dinmore Manor" and one number-plate "7820" will be put into the hands of Messrs Sheffield Railwayana Auctions. The pair will probably go into the December 2002 auction.

Although purchase by the Dinmore Manor Fund might seem a good thing, these items can fetch quite a sum, and the Fund needs every penny to keep the loco running.

Photos of GWR Sleeper Car No 9038 found... Malc Stacey of Bridgwater has found a set of photographs of the GWR Sleeper Car no 9038 - currently in the final stages of restoration at Williton. The pictures show the progress of the coach, built in 1898, from the railway at Bridgwater to Stogursey, where the Car started a new life as a residence - the cladding was carried out by Malc's father and his two brothers, who were local builders at the time. The coach was recovered some years ago and is being restored by the West Somerset Steam Railway Trust - as near as possible to orginal condition.

WSR Chairman's Report for 2000 The full text of the Chairman's Report to the WSR plc AGM will no doubt appear elsewhere. But readers might like to learn that the Railway enjoyed a slight increase in passenger numbers - from 153382 to 154421 - in 2000. A creditable consolidation given the bad weather and reduced numbers of visitors to the South West.

Of great technical interest is the plan to extend Electric Key Token (EKT) along the entire line. It is stated that this will be completed over a five year period. It will certainly enhance the working of the line.

The disappointment comes through clear when we learn about the postponed upgrading of the junction with the national network at Norton Fitzwarren. Railtrack does have more pressing demands on its resources and I think we all understand. With luck, we are now looking at comencement in two or three years.

The delays in progressing the engineering work on S&DJR no 88 are noted, along with delays with the restoration and rebuild of GWR no 5193 as a "mogul".

The effects of the Foot & Mouth disease upon the fortunes of South West tourism are yet to be fully understood, and the Chairman expresses his concerns in his Report.

Finally, the Chair thanks the voluntary support groups, including the Friends of Watchet Station, who have, for anyone who has visited the harbour station, begun to work wonders at Watchet.

Steam Fayre & Vintage Rally cancelled... The WSRA has taken the decision to cancel the Rally on August 6 and 7. This is due to the continuing effects to the foot and mouth epidemic. The WSRA web site quotes the WSRA Board - "The event relies heavily on co-operation from local farmers, and the WSRA believes it is in the best interests of the local community that the event be cancelled, albeit with great reluctance.". The report concludes that something a "little special" may well be laid on for that weekend to help compensate.

"Quantock Belle" runs again The Luxury Dining Train ran on 10 June headed by GWR 0-6-0PT no 6412 sporting the "Quantock Belle" headboard. Seems the old name just will not go away...

A further report on the Topica WSR Discussion Group suggests the re-appearance of the name to "Quantock Belle" is not short-lived and will replace the "Luxury Dining Train" name. The reversion has the agreement of the WSRA Board, has found great favour amongst those who work on the train, and will. I am sure, help the regular customers re-discover a lost friend. As the original suggestion of the name came from me back in the early 1980s when the first dining trains were being planned with the Pullman cars then on the line, I am much chuffed...

Longer trains on WSR than main line... The WSR is running longer trains over it's metals than TOCs do on the mainline! For instance, the Virgin trains service from Plymouth to Derby has lately been formed of four Mk2 coaches (no buffet), hauled by a class 47 diesel, and the Bristol-Manchester service is formed of five MK2 coaches again hauled by class 47 diesel. First Great Western are running the Paddington-Exeter-Paddington service as seven MK2 coaches (with buffet facilities) hauled by class 47 diesel. Today on the WSR, the ex-Minehead train was formed of seven coaches complete with full buffet facilities, and the ex-Bishops Lydeard train was strenthened to eight coaches again with full buffet facilities!

Some WSR-related bits in the "Gazette" A worthy link for you to bookmark is that to the Somerset County Gazette which often carries news on or about the Railway. Last week for example, a local businessman blocked the entrance to Watchet's East Quay in protest at virtual round-the-clock working on the new marina due to be finished next month. WSR scholars will recall the East Quay was created by the original Railway. Next, came the story of the filming at Minehead of Britain's Strongest Man by the BBC, with the Railway featuring in part. David Bailey's Wildlife Special aboard a WSR DMU on July 14 is also featured in some detail. And even the Chairman is quoted as saying that "We need more experienced fitters and engineers to work, full or part-time, on our fleet of steam locos. The work could suit someone recently retired or perhaps new to the area with an engineering background."

"Odney Manor" back in steam After an overhaul that included retubing, it was good to see BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7828 "Odney Manor" raising steam in the yard. A couple of test trips to Blue Anchor followed. The Manor will be much welcomed back into the steam fleet, See News Pix page for a photo by Alan Grieve.

Activities at Minehead on an otherwise "normal" day... First, GWR 'King' 4-6-0 no 6024 'King Edward I' worked a special dining train set down from the other end of the line, leaving Bishops Lydeard at 8.45am, in connection with the official opening of the Minehead Sea Defence works. The WSR, of course, played an important part in these works, carrying around 100000 tonnes of stone over the line for use in the defences. Then, the dining car set was attached to the rake forming the 12.15 departure, and no 6024 was given the chance to prove what it could do with ten coaches behind the tender. And just to add a litle more interest, 'Dinmore Manor' collected three wagons from the stone siding in readiness for a rehearsal of the 'Britain's Strongest Man' competition on 17 May. See News Pix page for a couple of photos by Alan Grieve.

First of three DMU vehicles arrives The first vehicle of the Territorial Army's 3-car Class 117 DMU has now arrived on the line in the shape of Trailer Second Lavatory no 59505. Currently in ScotRail blue livery, the TSL (once a TCL but has now had the first-class compartments removed) will be joined by the power cars shortly. All three will then receive a green livery with "whiskers" at the cab ends. The TSL was overhauled in 1998 and in use until recently in Scotland. It is therefore in ready-to-run condition.  No return "Taw Valley" for the WSR Following the recent sale of No 34027 "Taw Valley" - still in the red livery and purporting to be "Hogwarts Express" - the loco will not now be coming to the WSR in the summer, opting for the Severn Valley Railway instead.

However, the heavy-tank GWR 2-8-0T no 4247, currently at the end of a lengthy restoration, will be on the line in the next few months, following running-in trials at Didcot.

Vision of the near future? 67007 at Bishops Lydeard - pic by David Randles In the excitement of steam locos arriving for the Silver Jubilee Gala in March, I missed something that gives a glimpse of how things might be in the near future at Bishops Lydeard.

The picture taken by David Randles on March 17, right, shows EWS Class 67 no 67007 (right) at the head of the 4.20pm Minehead to Paddington, having replaced "Dinmore Manor" and "Kinlet Hall" which hauled the train, the "Exmoor Express" as far as Bishops Lydeard. This was the first visit of a Class 67 to the WSR.

On the left of the picture, is EWS Class 47 no 47761 waiting for the 5.00pm Minehead to Derby to arrive behind BR(W) 2-6-2T no 4160 and GWR 0-6-0PT no 6412.

A busy scene, not unlike a summer Saturday, and something we may see more and more of once the link at Norton Fitzwarren/Silk Mill is upgraded.

22 April 2001 Details and photo from March Web Site. Many thanks to David for this story.

What a Gala that was... The latest OnLine reports a very successful Gala. The report is reproduced verbatum:

"Was very busy, as everyone who was around the Railway will be fully aware. We ended up by carrying a total of 6,965 passengers over the three days, an increase of 28% over 2000. Buffet and dining cars did exceptional business, shops and sales stands were busy from opening to closure, TTIs battled through crowded trains valiantly, booking offices kept selling and visitors appreciated the chance to look around workshops and behind the scenes. The photographers also 'played ball' magnificently.

There were two mechanical problems, both on Friday when 80136 became stage shy in the morning and 4936 ran into difficulties on an up train in the afternoon. Nor were we our normal immaculate selves on the time keeping front, particularly on Saturday where the last train left Minehead an hour late and we will need to see what went awry with a tried and trusted timetable apart from the mechanical problems of the morning.

However to everyone who planned the event, worked trains, parked cars, drove buses and did all the other necessary jobs the WSR and West of England tourism generally owes a big debt of thanks. We put a lot of people and money into the local economy."

To add to the above, this web site offers a hearty thanks to those who visited the Railway during the Gala, and helped publicise the event, and finally, to all those at the sharp end.

Changes to motive power arrangements on the Capital Castle railtour The posting on Topica reports: " 6024 will haul the train Minehead to Paddington throughout. 5029 will now pilot the train from Bristol to Old Oak Common. Apparently operating requirements at Bristol will not give time to water both locos while platform length at Paddington will not accommodate 14 coaches plus two locos."

Lineside photography is suspended The WSR has announced that access to the lineside for photography is suspended until further notice. This is a precaution to minimise the risk of spreading the foot and mouth disease to neighbouring farm stock.

The WSR web site states, "As you are aware the farming industry and the activity of the countryside generally is under great pressure from the current outbreak of Foot and Mouth and this clearly affects all aspects of rural life, including the railways that pass through such areas. After some heart searching we have decided to inform holders of our Lineside Photographic Passes that we must suspend the photographic rights normally conveyed by possession of an LSP. Currently the area through which the WSR runs is free of the disease but it is occurring at no great distance from the Railway and West Somerset and Taunton Deane must be at some risk. We have therefore dicided that we must impose this suspension until advised by MAFF and the National Farmers' Union that the surrounding countryside is free of the disease and movement restrictions are lifted.

This is not a decison that we are taking lightly. We have had an excellent relationship with LSP holders in the past and are very aware that as a group you have behaved in a highly responsible way. However under the prevailing circumstances the WSR has a duty to trade responsibly and if Foot and Mouth were to appear after someone photographing trains had been seen in the affected area we would clearly come under pressure to suspend operations altogehter. Our own staff are under instructions that they should only join the Railway via Station areas and our Permanent Way Dept is not only following this instruction but are carrying approved disinfectant supplies with them and using these whenever they arrive or leave their working areas.

So, please bear with us in this matter. If everyone is patient and responsible for a short while the risk will probably fade and we can all enjoy our own pursuits again in the usual manner. To compensate for any loss of enjoyment we will extend pass validity when you next renew. Thank you for your co-operation. We will advise you of the lifting of the suspension as soon as it comes off."

Dunster bus link success East Kent Tiger - pic by Roy Williams Seen by some as an echo of the pioneering spirit of the old Great Western Railway, one of the first railway companies to run bus services as well as trains, the WSR's Heritage Bus service between Dunster Station and Dunster Village was an outstanding success over the Easter weekend.

The bus driver, Alan Grieve, reports "The Vintage Bus service from Dunster Station to Dunster Village on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday was a great success with 149 passenger journeys on Sunday and a staggering 244 on Monday, these figures being up by 39.3% and 83.5% respectively on the equivalent days in 2000. This service, which is provided free by the WSR in vehicles hired from the Rexquote Vintage Fleet, is much appreciated by passengers, many of whom take the opportunity to ride up to Dunster and walk back and enthusiasts are always interested to see what the weekend will produce. This time it was 1937 East Kent Leyland Tiger TS8 JG9938, immaculately restored with newly recovered seats in the correct mocquette which attracted much comment and sounded superb making all the right pre-war Leyland sounds. The pictures [see the NewsPix page] show two views of the vehicle at Dunster Station in one of which I am standing extremely proudly by the Tiger. It was a privilege to be entrusted with such a vehicle for the weekend."

Warship sighted in West Country D821 new nameplate An event lost to some in the pre-Gala melee. Two Diesels with a WSR link were back in the West Country recently. Warship diesel D821 "Greyhound" which visited the WSR in 1994 for the diesel gala was dragged by D449 ( latterly 50149 "Defiance" and was based until recently at Williton on the WSR) to Falmouth docks in Cornwall for a special naming ceremony on Saturday 24th March by the Royal Navy in conjunction with a visit to the dock by HMS Cornwall. D821 will carry the "Cornwall" nameplates for a minimum of twelve months.

New booklet about the Minehead Railway In his new booklet "They Must Have Been Mad! (or were they?", John Dixon looks at West Somerset in the 1860s, and describes the tiny population and depressed state of the three separate and disparate communities of Lower Town, Church Town and Quay Town that made up Minehead and poses the question as to why anyone in their right mind would want to build a railway there; especially as the West Somerset Railway was so certain it was a non starter they built their terminal at Watchet across the end of their running line, so that the extension - when it did come - was tricky.

It then goes on to wonder why, having decided to build the line, did the Directors of the Minehead Railway build it along the most expensive and demanding (in terms of civil engineering) route when they could have far more cheaply and easily followed the Turnpike Road and taken in a number of populous communities along the way.

The price is just £1.50 (by post) and all the proceeds go towards Friends of Minehead Station and the upkeep and further restoration of Minehead Station. It is also stocked at the "Buffer Stop" and "Readers Halt" at Minehead Station.

Not one, but two steam specials arrive from the main line A local correspondent was at Bishops Lydeard to witness the arrival of two steam-hauled specials from the main line:

"First was The Exmoor Express, hauled by GWR 4-6-0 no 4936 'Kinlet Hall', from London. BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820 'Dinmore Manor' was attached on the front to add some extra power. The weather was wet and the rails greasy."

"Some 40 minutes later, in came a Pathfinder charter from the Midlands with a Class 47 diesel on the front with GWR 'Castle' 4-6-0 no 5029 'Nunney Castle' behind. It is thought the Castle had problems with injectors. The 47 was taken off and BR(W) 2-6-2T no4160 put on the front. There was a problem with getting vacuum so the generator car was taken off the back by the BR class 08 shunter and the train eventually left in clouds of smoke and steam."

"The two trains were due to be in Minehead together for a time which must have been quite a sight. Hopefully, the pubs and teashops did a roaring trade."

Bishops Lydeard - new public address system Over a year ago, the public address system at Exeter St Davids station was updated to a new electronic one. A WSR volunteer managed to negotiate and acquire a total of 26 speakers and then transported them to Lydeard where the electrician checked them over and mounted them at various locations along the platforms. A new amplifier and microphone have also been installed. All station announcements will be carried out by a dedicated member of the station staff. The system has been successfully tested and it will be used to full effect on the forthcoming Silver Jubilee Steam Gala. It has been said that the new system is so good that the residents of the nearby villages will also know at what time trains will be departing!

Bishops Lydeard - re-signalling stage 2B is ready Notices have been issued to operating staff detailing the changes to the signalling project at Bishops Lydeard. The Paddington end of the station is now bristling with lower-quadrant signals, and, effectively, the entire loop is now back under the control of the lever frame in the signal box. Stage 2B was due to be commissioned on 10 March 2001. The resignalling at Bishops Lydeard is a complex affair, especially as it deals with the exchange of traffic to and from the main network. Visitors to the Silver Jubilee Steam Gala at the end of March will be the first to see the new setup in action.

"Safe" Areas from which to take photos during the Gala The Railway has issued some helpful guidance to photographers visiting the line during the Gala at the weekend...

The rights granted to holders of Lineside Photographic Permits to enter safe areas of the Railway's property for photographic purposes are temporarily withdrawn until the Foot and Mouth restrictions are lifted.

We recognise that the Railway remains of interest to photographers and we have identified the following areas on Railway property which we think can be safely used by photographers without infringing Foot and Mouth restrictions.

The full length of Minehead platform is now open to the public. The locomotive sheds and yard will be open on Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April 2001.

DUNSTER
An area of the Permanent Way yard will be available within a fenced off area.

BLUE ANCHOR
An area on the down side of the level crossing will be fenced close to the Camping Coaches. Good views are also obtainable from the beach.

WASHFORD
The Museum will be open as normal. In addition an area on the Down Side at the down end of the Platform towards the accommodation bridge will be fenced.

Clearly there are public areas alongside the line which will remain open. Please obey all restriction signs posted by the landowners and the local authorities. If parking at the side of the public roads please do so in a manner that allows other traffic to continue to flow smoothly. The WSR shares almost 50 miles of boundary fence with farmers. Their industry is in crisis. Please respect the requirement for strict observance of these and any other restrictions. If we all act responsibly we will all have an enjoyable weekend and remain on good terms with our neighbours.

We are advised that the authorities will not hesitate to prosecute. The regulations allow fines up to £5000.

We have advised the authorities of the arrangements we have made, and that we NEVER give permission for anyone to enter private land.

REFUNDS
If you have bought a Lineside Pass for the Event and are not content with these arrangements we will offer the following:-
a) A full refund provided the pass is returned to us BEFORE the day(s) for which is has been issued.

WSR 1 BBC 0 A local correspondent reports, "Tonight (14 February 2001), on BBC's 'Tomorrows World', presenter Pippa Forrester demonstrated the new device for breaking carriage windows in case of emergency to aid the quick evacuation of the train. The two devices are exactly the same ones that were tested and proven on the FGW exercise on the WSR over two months ago, and that was reported in depth not only on your site but in the railway press too! Another first for the WSR!"

5 February 2001 Details from WSR plc

News from Crowcombe Heathfield The Station and staff at Crowcombe are recovering from entertaining over 4000 visitors (including a well-built chap with a long white beard and red attire) during December.

The new floor in the Booking Office is now complete, along with new wall panelling. Next for the chippie treatment are the doors.

The line through Crowcombe has been busy, despite no passenger trains since New Years Day, thanks to many engineers trains passing through with ballast from Bishops Lydeard in connection with the relaying exercise near Leigh Woods, between Crowcombe and Stogumber.

Also, seen using the line, are Mendip Rail who are training drivers on Class 59 locomotives.

Proposal to re-open the Barnstaple line No it isn't April Fools Day. Articles on the "This is North Devon" and "This is Taunton" web sites discuss the proposal to re-open most of the ex-GWR Devon and Somerset Railway from Norton Fitzwarren as far as South Molton. If re-opened, the WSR could be involved in such things as a joint station at Norton. Part of the text from the "This is Taunton" site is reproduced here:

"Taunton’s Jackie Ballard and North Devon Liberal Democrat MP Nick Harvey will take to the skies next Friday to get an aerial view of the disused line between Taunton and South Molton, which was axed despite major local opposition in 1960s.Now a North Devon councillor, Dick Joy, wants the authorities to carry out a feasibility study to see whether the line could be reopened both for passengers and freight. It is unlikely the route would be opened all the way to Barnstaple because the track was taken up by the building of the North Devon Link Road. The idea has won strong support from Mr Harvey, who believes it could qualify for Government funding, especially in the light of the recent Rural White Paper. The Railway Development Society says the proposal is not one of its current priorities, but is “worth looking at”. TauntonDeane Borough Council’s economic development officer, Martin Dean, warned there would be costly “infrastructure difficulties” to reinstate the line due to piecemeal development along its route, with much of the land sold off in sections. One part of the track was lost to the building of the Milverton by-pass, for example, and homes have been built on part of the old line at Oake. But Jackie Ballard has welcomed the idea as “interesting”. “We won’t know how feasible it is until we take a look, but anything that would open up the rail network is to be welcomed,” she said."

"Kinlet Hall" for WSR? GWR "Hall" 4-6-0 no 4936 "Kinlet Hall" seems set to cover for GWR "Castle" 4-6-0 no 5051 "Earl Bathurst" and will head the Paddington to Minehead "Exmoor Express" on 17 March 2001. The "Hall" will therefore be present for the Silver Jubilee Steam Gala on 30 March to 1 April, although no confirmation of the loco taking part has been received. No 4936 will be off to Penzance with "Nunney Castle" shortly after the Gala on 7 April, will return to WSR on 16 April and then head, with no 5029, the Minehead-Paddington on 19 May.

First Great Western coaches removed from Minehead The four First Great Western coaches, which have been stored at Minehead, were collected today by 47816 with Barrier Coaches 6336 & 6348.  Record year for WSR The good news from Minehead is that the Railway carried 154,421 passengers in 2000. That is a small increase on the 153,832 recorded in 1999. The important thing here is that the record has again been broken. No changing of the counting rules either! Interesting to note that the Railway state that it was the post-Christmas services that saw the 1999 figure exceeded.

Locos on the move... Volunteers at Williton during mid December had good cause to be cheer as the partly-restored frames of the "Small Prairie" GWR 2-6-T no 5542 were unloaded after a trip by lowloader from Bridgnorth. The same lowloader then took the remains of the Southern "Pacific" no 34053 "Sir Keith Park" away from the line.

For a third time, the GWR "Heavy Tank" 2-8-0T no 4277, owned by Pete Best, is due to spend some time during 2002 as a guest of the WSR. This is early planning indeed!

The WSRA's GWR 0-6-0PT no 6412 is due back any day from its visit to North Norfolk. The loco will undergo routine maintenance in readiness for the Silver Jubilee Steam Gaga at the end of March.
