The WSR Plc Chairman's address to shareholders

WSR

The West Somerset Railway Plc's Annual General Meeting was held on 23 June 2018 at the Hobby Horse in Minehead. The formal business covered approval of the accounts, election of directors, appointment of auditors, and was followed by an informal question and answer session. Some very perceptive questions were asked and some very good points raised. The minutes of the AGM are now being finalised and will be put on the official website when ready, along with details of the Q&A sessions. Meantime, the Plc Chairman, Ian Coleby, has kindly provided a link to his personal blog and a link to his AGM address.

Development plans for Watchet's East Quay approved

WSR

West Somerset Council have approved the local company Onion Collective's plans to develop part of East Quay at Watchet. East Quay is adjacent to the West Somerset Railway. The quay - once rail-connected - was built by the original WSR company and later developed by the GWR into a busy working harbour, before eventual closure in the 1980s. The theme of the proposals do not, sadly, seem to reflect either the maritime or railway heritage of the East Quay.

The West Somerset Railway was formally consulted and in a letter, the Railway expressed its support for the venture but raised concerns for a possible increase in footfall across nearby Goviers Lane Crossing. The Council's report suggests there will be no significant increase. At least one media report mentions the concerns being solved by the introduction of 'safety gates to restrict access' but this is not menioned in the Council's report.

Three old Westward TV news clips featuring the WSR

WSR
British Film Institute

Nick Jones, the first Operating Superintendent of the West Somerset Railway, has unearthed three TV clips made by the much missed Westward TV in the mid 1970s. Each clip features Westward TV's John Doyle along with interviews and scenes from the Railway. The TV clips are now available online thanks to the British Film Institute. The first clip shows Westward TV reporter John Doyle at a dilapidated Blue Anchor station on the West Somerset Railway ahead of the reopening of the line as the longest heritage railway in England; in the second clip, John Doyle returns to announce a reshuffle at the West Somerset Railway...the Company has failed in its attempt to run a commuter railway service on the Bishops Lydeard to Minehead line; and in the third clip, John Doyle visits Taunton Railway station to interview two representatives of the West Somerset Railway Company on averting closure.

Success for new timbers funding appeal for brake van

WSR

The WSR Wagon Restoration Group's Ken Davidge reports:

We have bettered our funding appeal target for the brake van woodwork and will be closing the donation page. Many, many thanks for all your help. We were well over and having discovered seven floor planks were rotten and replacements have been ordered. What great things we can achieve when we work together. We will be on site again on Wednesday with the new tools for rubbing down and five litres of undercoat. By 3pm, the brake should be mostly white...

All seems on target for completion later this summer, well before the '1940s Weekend' on 15 and 16 September.

He was the Station Master at Stogumber Station for the last three years where he was highly thought of by all of its volunteers. Both the railway and the station were a huge part of Alan's life and he will be sadly missed by all. Our thoughts at this moment go to Maggie, his wife, who is also a volunteer at the station.

Alan's funeral will be held on Thursday 12 July at Taunton Crematorium at 1pm.

Successful Diesel Gala for the West Somerset Railway

WSR

Over the four days of 7 to 10 June the Quantock Hills reverberated to the sound of the West Somerset Railway's annual Diesel Gala event. WSR Head of Commercial, Mark Hill said:

Over the four days we welcomed over 2,000 visitors, many of whom stayed in West Somerset for the weekend. Receipts are significantly up on previous years, so it has been a financial success for the Railway and more than justified the expense of bringing in these visitors.

Gus Dunster of the FiftyFund, owners of Ark Royal said:

We received a very warm welcome from the West Somerset Railway and would look forward to a return visit.

The West Somerset Railway's next big event is the Autumn Steam Gala on 27 to 30 September but steam and diesel trains now run every day until then and most days in October.

A statement from the DEPG

WSR

The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group have issued a statement:

The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group would like to thank everyone who turned out to support the Diesel Gala on the West Somerset Railway last weekend in any capacity, both operational and visitors alike. We had a varied cast of visiting locomotives and we are grateful to their respective owners for bringing them to the seaside.

Most of you will be aware that we suffered a distressing failure of Class 52 no D1010 Western Campaigner late on Friday evening. Our initial diagnosis has confirmed that a major failure has occurred inside the transmission at B End meaning it can no longer be used. The transmission has now been manually locked into neutral to permit the locomotive to be moved. Our priority now is to arrange for D1010 to be recovered safely to Williton where we will be able to remove the cooler group and access the transmission. Only when we have been able to look inside the gearbox will we be able to determine the full extent of the failure and any damage caused. We will keep you posted on developments on our website www.depg.org

Restoring a 1942 MoD Goods Brake Van

WSR

The West Somerset Railway Association are supporting the restoration of an ex-MoD Brake Van:

Following the successful restoration and fundraising for two open wagons, the Wagon Restoration team have turned their attention to a 1942 MoD Goods Brake Van owned by the WSR Plc. This brake van needs replacement tongue and grooved timber boards for the body, new roofing materials, paint and a tarpaulin. Once again the team turned to the WSRA for funding and again the Trustees agreed to fundraise for the costs. There were enough funds left from the first campaign to pay for the tarpaulin for the Brake Van, so the remaining funding requirement is £473.

The Association is now looking for donations to help with this particular funding. See the link below for more details of how to help.

WSRA funds new lever leads for historic Williton Signal Box

WSR

The West Somerset Railway Association have announced:

Lever leads in the Williton Signal Box have been replaced and changed over the years, leaving some old faded leads and some hardboard leads, plus the new Williton layout has required new lever leads on several of the levers, which are currently stuck on paper labels! This situation is detracting from the education and heritage value of the signal box and so the WSRA Trustees have agreed to fund the project to supply a complete set of 25 new levers.

Williton Signal Box is a Grade II listed building and the only original Bristol & Exeter Railway box on the West Somerset Railway.

An update from the WSR's Locomotive Department

WSR

Rich Hiscox from the WSR's Locomotive Department reports on recent events:

Been a somewhat busy week or so for us all in the locomotive department. Various challenges have cropped up in one form or another. 7822 was failed unfortunately on Tuesday evening with a broken bogie spring bolt which isn't the easiest of things to change - involves dropping several other bits off to get at, but ever determined to get it back into traffic a 6am start this morning to fix the fault saw it haul the last service back to Bishops Lydeard today. 6960 continues in service hauling the MD1 diagram. 7F 53808 was stopped on Monday evening for boiler washout/examination and new parts being fitted to its tired Silvertown axlebox lubricator to ensure its reliability for the future. Work on S160 6046 is ongoing to ensure its reliability on the pump side of things with a aim to re-enter WSR service next week. As ever the overhaul side of things is progressing well with 7828 looking ever closer to hauling trains again later this season.

Class 20 no 20142 replaces no 20205 at the Diesel Gala

WSR
Geof Sheppard via Creative Commons 4.0 licence

Posted on the Facebook page of the West Somerset Railway Plc:

There has been a change in the line-up of the West Somerset Railway Diesel Gala. Class 20 no 20142 replaces no 20205 for operational reasons. Timetables will be published online on Wednesday 23 May 2018.

Don Bishop, Chairman of the WSR's Gala Planning Team, adds:

As things progress towards our big 'Vintage Diesels to the Seaside' gala on 8th - 10th June the Gala Planning Team announce that one of the pair of class 20 locomotives attending the event has been changed for operational reasons. No 20142 will now attend along with no 20189, as BR Blue companion 20205 is air brake only. Although we were aware of this when we agreed its hire, there were ways of overcoming this with the locos running as a pair throughout the gala. However various further issues have come up which will make it much easier to have two vacuum braked examples available instead and owner Michael Owen has kindly agreed to swap the locos over. No 20142 is actually in London Transport maroon livery so will make an interesting contrast with the more traditional BR Blue 20189. This will be the first LT liveried loco to work on the WSR in preservation.
