A genuine Great Western coach for the Railway

WSR

Restoration is well advanced on ex-GWR Brake Composite coach no 6705 with the aim of delivering it to the company during 2014 to run attached to regular trains. Passengers will be able to experience the soft cushions, the comfortable springing, leather window straps and polished woodwork of another era. No 6705 was built by the GWR at Swindon in 1938 and withdrawn from traffic in 1967. It was overhauled at Swindon and shipped to a railway museum in Vermont, USA, and latterly kept at Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was brought back to the UK in 2007 and the bodywork was partly restored at Crewe. Restoration is now being completed at Williton, through a combination of volunteer input and contract work with West Somerset Restoration. More information on the Trust website and on the Key Projects page.

Ex-Barry Railway coach body saved by the Association

WSR

Acting on a tip-off by a member, the West Somerset Railway Association moved quickly to rescue a well-preserved Victorian railway coach body. One of two similar coach bodies forming part of a summerhouse in a garden near Cockwood in Devon, the coach was removed with great urgency from the property as its partner had already been destroyed. Not much is known about the coach which was bought from the GWR in the 1930s and moved to the Cockwood site. It is remarkably good condition and arrived at Williton still attached to its land wagon wheelsets which ar ealso of historical interest being built by Stenner and Gunn of Tiverton as a timber wagon. It is understood the future of the coach body is not yet determined.

Four GWR steam locos in action at Winter Steam Gala

WSR

The West Somerset Railway’s popular two day Winter Steam Festival is a well-established part of the week between Christmas and the New Year and the 2013 event will take place on Saturday 28 December and Sunday 29 December. The quartet of engines that are planned to see action over the two days are all of Great Western origin, namely 2884 class no 3850, Large Prairie no 4160, Modified Hall no 6960 Raveningham Hall and Manor Class no 7828 which is once again named Norton Manor after briefly reverting to Odney Manor during the recent Autumn Steam Gala. There will be hourly departures from both Bishops Lydeard and Minehead from 9.45am to 3.45pm and normal train fares will apply. However it is possible to purchase discounted one and two day rover tickets in advance from 01643 704996 or via www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk. The Minehead turntable will be in use but not the Norton Triangle so not all locomotives will run smokebox first during the two days. It is hoped to offer the popular "Driver for a Fiver" at Minehead Station but, with winter maintenance in progress, this may be at the controls of a diesel locomotive.

The Allerford headshunt is extended by twenty feet

WSR

The Allerford Spur headshunt has been extended towards Barnstaple. On Saturday 19 October 2013, the Permanent Way team installed a twenty foot track panel to the end of the existing spur and moved the buffer stops to the new railhead at Allerford Bridge - see map. This work will allow a 24 wagon High Output Ballast Cleaner (HOBC) with top and tail locomotives to use the Triangle to turn. Previously only HOBCs with a single locomotive could use the Spur when turning. Turning a HOBC is usually required to allow for maintenance of the hi-tech equipment. This extension will benefit both Network Rail (who now have an alternative to Westbury for turning) and the WSR.

Restorations commemorated at Washford in early October

WSR

Two significant restoration achievements were celebrated at Washford on Saturday 5 October 2013, during the West Somerset Railway’s Autumn Steam Gala. A Victorian railway carriage, which spent over 50 years as a cricket pavilion, and an industrial steam locomotive formally used at a Somerset coal mine were exhibited resplendent in the fully lined out Prussian blue livery of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. The Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust Chairman, Godfrey Baker, paid tribute to the many individuals and organisations involved over many years "It has been a long haul and during those many years many people have helped with the project, such is the length of time, many people have moved on. Today we wish to thank them all; I know that volunteers do not get involved for the glory or even in many cases look for any recognition of their endeavours, becoming instead unsung heroes. The list of names is long and includes of course those that are no longer with us and unlike us able to glory in the fruits of their labours." Full story...

Name that train - a competition to create a real ale train brand

WSR

During 2013 the WSR has run two trial Real Ale Trains in association with the Somerset Branch of CAMRA, including a host Somerset brewery and an optional meal. The Railway is looking to further develop these trains for 2014 and crucial to that process is a recognisable and memorable brand and the WSR Hospitality Department is launching a competition to create and design a visual identity for these trains. The brief is to design a visual identity for the West Somerset Railway Ale trains, comprising a name and logo. The name and associated logo should encompass the themes of Real Ale, Somerset and of course steam trains; should communicate the feel and experience of a Real Ale train on the West Somerset Railway; and will need to be creative but also memorable and appropriate. The simplest ideas are often the best. The winning entrant will enjoy free travel on all West Somerset Railway Ale trains for 2014 and a case of bottled beer. Full Brief...

A story of railway happenings for our younger readers

WSR

Sir Haydn had been at Minehead, on show and now had to get back home to a land called 'Wales'. His best friend, Foxy Manor gave him a lift to Bishops Lydeard on the Wednesday. This was a 'special' working, but attached to the back was a rough neck coal train guards van. He had very bad manners and was rough in his braking. On arrival at Bishops Lydeard Sir Haydn and Foxy were shunted into the siding so that more photos could be taken. The rough and rude goods van was taken away, much to every one's relief. Later on Odd Job Manor came roaring in with the last express train of the day. Odd Job had a new paint job and looked right smart. He was only used on top expresses. He went to take water for the return journey. Whilst he was sucking down a few tubes of water, a dirty little 09 came along and attached the guards van on the back of his train! Odd Job went ballistic. "What are you doing to my train?" he snorted. "I am not here to pull a goods train! Take it off!" But they didn't and he had to leave with it on. Foxy and Sir Haydn were well pleased. All credit must go to the good looking signalperson who sorted it all out.

The old news...

The news pages before May 2015 will appear in the panel on the left and may not render correctly due to changes in styling over the years. Also, some of the links may not work due to the target information having been removed from servers. News pages from May 2015 onwards will overwrite this page.
