The Cutting Back team continue to make progress from Turks and are now on the home straight leading toward Stogumber - the whistle board in the distance is about twelve months away but the sight of the board is a significant morale boost and a spur to reach Stogumber. This will complete the whole running line after only 16 years...but there will be a bit somewhere that has grown since and needs attention from the Team. The next Cutting Back weekend will be 10-11 September - park and walk down from Stogumber.

Venthorne is an 18th Century thatched cottage, quietly situated in the hamlet of Capton, near Williton, and within earshot of the steam trains climbing the gradient towards Crowcombe. Available by the week, the cottage makes a super base for exploring the nearby Quantock Hills, the coast and the railway. Frederick Furniss, the contractor who built the original Minehead Railway, lived at Capton.

• Signal sighting at Norton...
NFJ

A signal sighting meeting was held by Network Rail on 4 August to discuss the alterations to Norton Fitzwarren Junction. The shunt existing signal E627 which protects the exit from the branch will be replaced by a new 2 aspect (red/green) signal about 100 yards from the junction. The stop boards at mile post 165½ will be recovered. The existing WSR distant signal for the up stop board will be relocated to act as a fixed distant for the new signal. The existing signal from the Relief line will be altered to provide a position light junction indicator - feathers - for trains to the branch.
