 "Odney" for sale...

BR "Manor" no 7828 "Odney Manor" has been advertised for sale in a monthly railway magazine. The West Somerset Railway Company is known to be interested in purchasing a Manor class locomotive following the successful running of four Manors in the last ten years or so. Nos 7802, 7820, 7821 and 7828 have each proven very suitable for the heaviest summer service trains. The Company is also understood to have entered into negotiations with the owner of no 7828 "Odney Manor" which is currently advertised for sale.

 Another Auto for the Spring...

Locomotive 5542 Ltd have announced another day out with the Auto Trailer no 178 in the spring of 2004. Back by popular demand, Sunday 14 March 2004 is the date of the next "5542" organised Auto train special. Again it will traverse all twenty three miles of the WSR with the usual added value extras. A great opportunity to get out and see the West Somerset as it awakes from its winter slumber. The primroses should also be in full bloom by then. Further details and bookings available at www.loco5542.co.uk.

 Theft from The Gauge Museum...

The Association has reported the theft of two artefacts from The Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard during the afternoon of Sunday 28 December, during the Railway’s otherwise highly successful Winter Steam Festival. At 4pm a man, together with his partner and child, entered the building and carefully removed two exhibits from their display mountings. The exhibits are two single line electric key tokens, one marked “Swimbridge-South Molton” and the other “South Molton-Bishop’s Nympton”. The incident was recorded on the station’s CCTV cameras and the police have been informed. The WSRA is naturally keen to recover the items.

If anyone can throw any light whatsoever on the incident, is offered either or both of the tokens, or sees them advertised for sale, please contact the WSRA Administrator urgently – telephone 01823 433856. As a result of the theft, security measures in the museum are currently being reviewed.

Winter Steam Festival is a great success...

Reports from travellers, photographers and volunteers all seem to agree that the Winter Steam Festival - a new venture for the Railway - was a great success attracting huge numbers of passengers who enjoyed the experience of steam trains on a cold and crisp winter's day.

Trains were very busy. The first down train of the day, the 10.25 from Bishops Lydeard, was nigh full before departure. The Auto Trailer, paired with Prairie no 5542, was again a very popular choice for passengers and was, by all accounts, packed on all trips - and I am not sure the likening to the Circle Line at rush hour is a good thing or not!

A repeat Festival is already lined up for 2004...

 The 3000000th passenger...

On Saturday 27 December 2003, a Mr Carr from Glastonbury in Somerset became the present Railway's 3000000th passenger.

Mr Carr was travelling with his family and some friends from Zimbabwe on the 12.25 from Bishops Lydeard to Blue Anchor and return.

He had a champagne reception hosted by the Bishops Lydeard stationmaster Ian Aldridge and was presented with a framed 3000000 certificate and a family free travel pass for the whole of 2004.

 The Journal steams on...

The latest Journal - supplied every three months to members of the West Somerset Railway Association - has arrived on the doormat.

Once again the Editor, David Williams, has produced a superb publication, well worthy of Britain's most popular heritage railway. Packed with news, views, topical and historical articles and lots of photographs - eight colour and 28 black and white. Each of the ten stations has a report and there are eight pages giving updates of the line's motive power. On a strategic level, there is a detailed account of the plans for the many goods vehicles now on the line.

For more details of the WSRA, please visit the WSRA Web Site.

 Join the fun...

Join in the fun and help keep Britain's longest heritage railway at the top of the league. Membership of the West Somerset Railway Association will bring you plenty of benefits such as a quarterly fully illustrated magazine and free travel on the Railway. The WSRA is right at the centre of the Railway's activities, on a day-to-day basis and in the strategic long term too! Two ex-GWR locomotives are owned by the Association which also has considerable financial interests in other engines. Volunteering is also a major activity on the line, with the WSRA playing a major role especially in recruitment and training. Your membership will always directly help the Railway and even if, like me, you live hundreds of miles away from Somerset,, there's always lots of ways of supporting Britain's most popular heritage railway.  WSR about to welcome the 3000000th passenger

The West Somerset Railway is expecting to reach a major milestone next week when it carries its three millionth passenger. On Saturday 27 December, the Railway expects to welcome the lucky person who will make history. Managing Director Mark Smith plans to be at the Booking Office at Bishops Lydeard station ready to welcome the three millionth passenger. With a record year already in the bag, the Railway needs to top 185000 passengers this year to reach the 3000000 mark since reopening in 1976. The Railway is very confident that the counter will tick over on 27 December - which will be the first day of the post-Christmas operations and the following day is the Winter Steam Festival with three steam engines in action.

 Internet Gateway for Visit Exmoor

Recognising the power of the Internet, a group of local organisations have produced Visit Exmoor - a web site giving lots of online information about Exmoor National Park and the surrounding areas. The web site can be found at www.visit-exmoor.info. This is the official tourism portal site for the Exmoor & Quantocks region, and was developed through liaison between the Greater Exmoor Tourism Consortium, West Somerset District Council and the Exmoor National Park Authority.  Big Four theme for Spring Gala

The Cambrian theme originally scheduled for the Spring Steam Gala in 2004 has been postponed to a later date. The planned theme is now a "Big Four" event, the aim at this stage being to hire-in at least one engine from the LMS, LNER and SR to complement the existing GWR-dominated home fleet.

LNER J15 no 65462 has already been secured, subject to contract. The GWR auto train - with nos 5542 and 6412 taking turns- will again feature at the Spring Steam Gala on 25-28 March 2004.

Please note the above is the current plan and may be subject to change.

 Eastern Goods for Somerset...

A report in a monthly railway magazine states J15 0-6-0 no 65462 will enjoy a brief visit to Somerset in March 2004. The dates mentioned would suggest an appearance at the Spring Steam Gala.

The West Somerset Railway comments "The invitation has been offered and accepted informally, and there seems to be lots of enthusiasm in all directions".

We also understand the visit is subject to completion of the finer details of the agreement.

 More Beatles pictures turn up...

Tim King, a very long-serving volunteer, has turned up three more pictures of the Fab Four, taken by Barbara White at Crowcombe, whilst researching the notable events on and off the Railway during 1964. One of the pictures is shown on the right, and all three can be viewed at larger sizes on the Beatles page.

Tim would be pleased to hear from anyone who might be able to provide any Minehead Branch related stories, press cuttings or pictures from 1964 - a year that saw a "Duchess" and a "Terrier" making for Butlins, goods trains withdrawn and of course a visit by four young men from Liverpool...

One coach special proves very popular...

The measure of a successful rail charter could be the number of coaches behind the loco - the Railway often sees 11,12,13 coaches coming in from other parts of the country. But on 7 December, a very successful charter consisting of a single coach - the ex-GWR autotrailer no 178 - and ex-GWR 2-6-2T no 5542 ran a full forty six mile round trip on the line to the delight of the lucky passengers. The tiny train stopped at several locations during the day for photographic purposes. On a cold but sunny day, the passengers enjoyed hot drinks and pasties at Williton, Crowcombe and Minehead stations. The "Tivvy Bumper Revisited" - a reference to the one-time single coach steam auto-train that ran from Tiverton Junction to the Town - was organised by Locomotive 5542 Limited. For a view of the event, please see the Tivvy Bumper Picture Page. Or read the Special Report by Jon Tooke...

 Braunton restoration news...

Work has started on tidying up the back head of the boiler ready for the cab fittings. Work has also started on marking out and drilling the tender frame plates, and the parts for the tender drag boxes.

Problems have arisen with the tender tank. Originally constructed under a Government training scheme, we have found that the tank is 4" too long and the internal framework for the sides is incorrect. With the floor also being under design thickness we are faced with a major reconstruction job.

All the rear cylinder and valve covers are fitted. The piston and valve assemblies are now ready to install as soon as the new piston rings are received. Work has started on the bogie centre and side control refurbishment, and for fitting two replacement horns.

 Sea Shanties and a Prairie...

The good people who look after the award-winning Crowcombe Heathfield Station have organised a special train to help boost station funds. Booked for the evening of 18 June 2004, the "Maritime Express" offers passengers a buffet meal whilst en route to Minehead and sea shanties on the platform at Minehead. The recently restored and hugely popular ex-GWR 2-6-2T 'small prairie' locomotive no 5542 - which plied the Minehead Branch in BR days - is expected to haul the train.  News from the Friends of Minehead Station...

The Readers Halt on Minehead platform now has a smart array of matching cupboards, replacing the previous rather motley collection. The bookstall has also been extended to provide more storage space. A rather neat swap of responsibilities resulted in former Treasurer Hein Burger taking over the Chairmanship from Alan Grieve who takes over the FoMS Treasury. Lysaght Village Hall in Old Cleeve hosted the Christmas Dinner enjoyed by forty seven members and friends. Of the many heavy activities undertaken by FoMS, the concreting of a large area near the offices and the repainting of the Signal Box stand out as major successes. For a full update on the wide range of FoMS activities, please visit the FOMS page.

 A Happy Event...

Jackie Quick, one of the volunteer chefs aboard the luxury dining train, the "Quantock Belle", married Kevin Weston at Taunton on 22 November. The bride, in an ivory dress and wrap, was given away by Mr David Bulley, signalman, guard and driver. Until recently, Kevin was the signal engineer for the Railway. After the ceremony, a reception was held at Crowcombe village hall, where some of the notable "Belle" characters set up, provided lunch, waited, served afternoon tea and generally looked after the guests into the evening.

 Christmas Shopping Trains

The Railway will be running a DMU service at reduced fares between Stogumber and Minehead for Christmas shopping on 13, 20, 22, 23, 24 December. The operation reminds us of the 1978 season when Stogumber was the southern railhead of the fledgling Railway with up to three DMU trains per day starting from the then tiny platform.

 Cancellations and Changes...

The Pathfinder Railtours excursion from Worcester to the Dunster by Candlelight event on Friday 5 December has been cancelled due to "...pathing south of Gloucester and engineering works on the return..." according to the Pathfinders web site. Another disappointing autumnal cancellation. Such a shame that many people prepared to pay good money for a trip to Dunster may now have negative thoughts about West Somerset and the Railway.

On a happier note, the excursion from Cardiff on the day after, 6 December, is still going ahead, albeit with a change of motive power with ex-BR diesel-electric class 45 no 45112 "Royal Army Ordnance Corps" now booked to head the train, reckoned to be the first visit of this particular loco to the WSR.

Taunton Link hits the headlines again...

Presumably quoting Somerset County Council policy and development consultant Brian Hensley, the Somerset County Gazette reports, "Rail operators could run train services between Taunton and Minehead once the bridge over the Silk Mills level crossing is built. Signal work permitting main line trains to connect to the West Somerset Railway will be carried out as the level crossing is decommissioned. The work will allow trains to be signalled through the Norton Fitzwarren junction to Bishops Lydeard and West Somerset. Train companies will be interested in ferrying thousands of holidaymakers to Butlins every year."

 News of the Hymek Twins...

The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group's Hymek D7018 - which hasn't worked for a number of years following a serious failure - has been moved from No 2 to No 1 road at Williton. This will enable further component removal before it is weather-proofed before going outside to stand on the new concrete apron where the body will be lifted to allow the removal of the bogies and the fuel tanks. The engine has been further stripped down and other damage was found to the pistons - it is not known if this is a result of the failure or from frost damage. Meanwhile, the other Hymek, no D7017, has been drained for the winter and is expected to be moved in the next few days to Williton from Minehead (where space will be a premium during the extremely busy Dunster by Candlelight evenings).

 News of Braunton...

The WSRA web site reports splendid progress on the restoration of Braunton: "The boiler from Bulleid ’Pacific’ No 34046 Braunton has now arrived back at the Association’s engineering base at Williton following repair by Roger Pridham at Tavistock, and has now been moved into the centre of No 1 Road inside the shed. The boiler was followed into the shed by the tender tank, on which work can now start. The new concrete floor is now clear for marking out and drilling the new tender frame plates and stretchers prior to assembly, and for fabrication of the required new ashpans. On the engine itself, all the new cylinder cover studs have been inserted, and the rear cylinder and valve covers fitted. The valve and piston assemblies are now almost ready for fitting."

Cutting Back is the activity on offer on 15-16 November - the planned log train will run later this winter- with the stretch adjacent to Roebuck Gate level crossing lined up for a spruce-up. On the Saturday, the plan is to work towards Stogumber, and in the opposite direction on the Sunday.

New volunteers are very welcome indeed - bring a 'hi-vis' jacket if you have one together with your lunch, coffee/tea, good gloves and stout shoes - and you should report to the leader, David Holmes, at approx 9.30am before going on the line.

 The Mongrel takes shape...

The conversion of "Large Prairie" 2-6-2T no 5193 to a "Mogul" 2-6-0 is beginning to take shape at the Minehead Loco Shed. The boiler - albeit without tubes - now sits atop the restored frames, and was recently lifted to allow the fitting of the ashpan.

Controversy surrounds the conversion with opinions split with some wishing to see the loco restored in the original form and others happy to see what might have happened if steam had not been withdrawn from British Railways...

 No 5542 news...

Ex-GWR 'Small Prairie' 2-6-2T no 5542 was due to undergo some planned remedial work on the inside motion during November, ahead of the Santa Train season. However having seen the popularity of the Autotrains and allow maximum availability for any additional Auto workings that may be required, the work has now been postponed until January. Enquiries are getting underway regarding the viability of manufacturing a set of WSR based Auto Gear equipment. The superbly restored Auto Trailer, worked alternately by nos 6412 and 5542, was a great crowd puller, as it plied the Norton section, Lydeard-Williton return trips and the long journey down to Minehead. A twelve coach train on Sunday evening, hauled by nos 7820 and 5553, provided a spectacular visual finale, the pair making a "rousing" ascent of Crowcombe bank. One can only imagine the noise...

 From the local rag...

A leisurely browse through the local paper, the Somerset County Gazette, reveals a handful of stories related in some way to the West Somerset Railway. The front page headline describes the impasse prevailing over the development of the East Quay at Watchet, which is or was part of the grand plan to regenerate the disused commercial harbour. WSR historians will recall the East Quay was created by the original West Somerset Railway to provide improved facilities at the ancient port. Inside the paper, it seems a great number of ramblers enjoyed a steam train trip to Crowcombe Heathfield before walking back to Bishops Lydeard. A smaller item discusses the future of the Egremont Hotel in Williton currently being converted to flats. The Egremont was, of course, where Sir Peregrine Fuller Palmer Acland called the very first meeting to promote the building of a railway from Watchet to the main line. Sir Peregrine later became the first Chairman of the first WSR.

 Electronic boost for no 5542...

No, the loco is not to be fitted with an overhead pantagraph, but the owning group, 5542 Ltd, gratefully received a cheque for £254.55 from volunteer guard, Jon Tooke on Saturday 4 October during the Autumn Steam Gala . Jon raised the sum by selling a number of railwayana items via the E-Bay internet auction web site. The picture shows Jon, centre, with Ian Aldridge, the Station Master at Bishops Lydeard on the left and John Wood, Chairman of 5542 Ltd on the right, with the said locomotive forming the background...

 Wagons in the news...

The WSRA website reports, "The Railway has purchased a further 'Dogfish' wagon, a 24.5tonne example, no 983909, for permanent way use. A few minor repairs are required before the wagon enters full service. It is hoped to repaint the line’s fleet of five ballast hoppers in matt black over the coming close season - all we need now is a BR 'Shark' brake van to go with them. Meanwhile, the restoration of 813 Fund-owned GW ballast wagon no 80669 has been completed to a very high standard, and the wagon will make its public debut on the demonstration goods train at the Autumn Steam Gala, together with the D&EPG’s bauxite-liveried 'Vanfit' No B784676."

 The Exmoor Express

A comprehensive excursion which starts from London Paddington at around 7.25am, diesel-hauled to Bishops Lydeard, where a WSR steam engine takes over for the last twenty miles to Minehead. After a couple of hours by the Somerset seaside, the train leaves Minehead at 1.50pm, headed by GWR 4-6-0 no 4936 "Kinlet Hall" and piloted as far as Bishops Lydeard by a WSR steam engine. The "Hall" then heads north via Bristol to Gloucester, where a diesel locomotive takes over for the run back to London.

 New WSR web site...

WSR volunteer guard Jon Tooke has created a new web site at www.wizzer.me.uk. The site is nicely arranged by theme - steam, diesel and so on - for the display of Jon's photos of the Railway, some taken during his very regular volunteering turns.

Jon often manages to photograph the Railway's less usual angles and the results are well worth a look. Be sure to return for regular updates, as his excellent web site is not static by any means...

 Steam auto-train...

The WSRA's web site reports that "...the main highlight of the Railway’s Autumn Steam Gala – which, for the first time, is being held on the first weekend in October, in what will now become its regular future ‘slot’ – will be the recreation of the Great Western auto train. This proved extremely popular at the 1996 Autumn Gala, when 14xx 0-4-2T no 1450 was used. This time, ex-GWR auto trailer no 178 – built at Swindon in 1930 and now owned by Mike Little, having recently undergone an extensive overhaul – will be hauled in ‘full auto mode’ by both 0-6-0PT no 6412 and 2-6-2T no 5542 over the course of the event. Both engines are being fitted with the necessary ‘auto gear’ at the bunker end in time for the event. This will rekindle memories of West Country branch lines in times gone by."

It was twenty eight years ago...

A significant anniversary in resident locomotive no 5542’s history is looming. On Thursday 25 September 1975, ex-GWR 2-6-2T no 5542 was unloaded from a low loader at Bishops Lydeard after the trip from Barry Scrapyard. Sister locomotives also arrived on the line around that time - no 4561 on the previous Tuesday and no 5521 on the following Sunday. The purchase price of each loco was £3,800 +VAT.

The WSRA Newsletter of the time reported "...whilst 5542 looks rather a sorry sight, with final restoration a long term project, 4561 and 5521 make a brave show in their ‘Brunswick Green’ livery, with black smokebox and chimney and Red buffer beams, set off with the Gold WSR emblem on the side tanks and replica ‘Brass’ numberplates (now removed for safety!).".

Nos 4561 and 5542 have, of course, been rebuilt to full working order, thanks to the dedication of just a small army of restorers. Work on no 5521 continues at the Flour Mill works in the Forest Of Dean.

 Washford Steam Open Day

This event - arranged and run by the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust - will be held at the Trust's base at Washford Station on Sunday 28 September 2003 between 10am and 5 pm. A survivor from the days of the Somerset Coalfields, no 1788 0-4-0ST "Kilmersdon", built in Bristol by Peckett, will be in steam, with shunting displays every hour on the hour...

In contrast, the much-larger main line steam engine, the ex-British Railways 4-6-0 no 7820 "Dinmore Manor" - one of the resident WSR locos - will be on display in light steam.

A narrow-gauge peat works engine and truck will be operating giving a visual reminder of the once very busy industrial railway systems on the peat moors of Somerset.

The excellent Somerset & Dorset Railway Museum will be open, along with the signalbox and shed. And a special one-day sale of railway books videos and other items all with 20% (or more!) off marked prices...

 Cutting back continues at Roebuck...

During the weekend of 13-14 September, the Association's Cutting Back Gang were out in force at Roebuck Gate and several large sycamores fell victim to the chain saws .Such is the dedication of the gang who eschewed the temptations afforded by the CAMRA Festival at Minehead!

Although the essential lineside clearance work continues throughout the year the main activity is from autumn through to spring - because there is less disturbance to wildlife, less disturbance by passing trains and more volunteers are available as there are fewer trains, signal boxes, stations and so on to be staffed.

The dates of the monthly work parties can be found on this web site, the WSRA web site, the internal newsletter OnLine and the WSRA's Journal. Full details can be obtained from Keith Sandford, WSRA Administrator on 01823 433856 or email WSRA@btconnect.com. Keith is a member of the gang during his spare time! A representative of the gang will be in attendance at the next New Volunteer Day starting at 11.00 am at Bishops Lydeard Station on Sunday 12 October.

 Filming at Williton...

WSRA web site reports "BBC Television spent the day at Williton station on Friday 29 August filming scenes for an adaptation of Anthony Trollope’s "He Knew What He Wanted", which will be screened on the BBC next April. Stars of the drama include John Alderton, Joanna David, Geraldine James, James Bolam, Geoffrey Palmer and Bill Nighy. Most of the filming was done on the Down platform and in the area around the North Yard, with the scene doubling-up as the Somerset & Dorset and somewhere in the Alps...thanks to the to-be-added computer graphics. Set in the 1860s, a rake of three vintage coaches were hired from the Vintage Carriages Trust (based at Ingrow on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway) for the filming, which were moved to Bishops Lydeard by road and then transported to/from Williton by a Class 33! No 7820 Dinmore Manor – suitably disguised – was also provided for the filming."

"WSR train services operated normally during the day – filming breaks being taken whilst trains crossed at Williton – though the two Minehead-Williton dmu services were terminated at Watchet."

Also reported was the renaming of Williton to "Lessborough" for the day...

Two more guest GWR locos for Gala...

Two ex-GWR tank engines – 0-6-2T no 5637 and 2-6-2T no 5553 – will both star at the Autumn Steam Gala on 2-5 October. No 5637– which is making its first visit to the WSR and is believed to be the first of that wheel arrangement to run on the current WSR – appears courtesy of the East Somerset and Swindon & Cricklade Railways – whilst no 5553, a member of the Waterman Railway Heritage Trust fleet, will be making a second visit to the line. It is also hoped these will be joined by a third Great Western tank engine, negotiations for which are currently in progress.

 Minehead Canopy

This impressive structure is believed to have been installed at Minehead in 1934. However, the stanchions are of a design used by the GWR from 1890-99 and there are two types at Minehead. Some appear to have been used previously as centre supports, and are configured to take rainwater drain pipes, others have previously been used in the same type of construction. The PW team are presently excavating to the base of one of the stanchions and, at 5'6" below platform surface, the base has yet to be revealed...

Comparing the photographs of Minehead with those from other locations, Minehead never had decorative beading on the end valances, nor on the eaves parallel to the platforms.

The guttering is fixed by a non-standard method which has not offered protection from the weather resulting in rather severe and ugly corrosion. In a word it appears to have been done "on the cheap"

The Railway now faces with rather interesting problem. Repair it as installed, or add the embellishments that were typical of the GWR practice elsewhere?

Thanks to Adrian Vaughan for his help with the above...

 Ex-GWR Stables to go?

In the corner of the old locomotive yard at Minehead, was a brick built stable, used to house the "railway" horse, and latterly, the delivery lorry. The stable now stands isolated from the remaining railway buildings and is used by the local boxing club. Can anyone provide any more on the history of this building and its various railway uses?

The proposed construction of a new three-storey building for the West Somerset District Council may well spell the end for this surviving artefact of the old days.

By the way, the horse provided the power for the local GWR parcels delivery cart.

 E-auction raises tidy sum...

WSR volunteer guard and regular contributor to this web site, Jon Tooke, has announced the results of the auction of a number of railway artefacts held to raise funds for the ex-GWR locomotive, no 5542, now in service on the Railway.

The range of this equipment was vast with items ranging from as small as a wallet for ID cards up to full uniforms and waterproof clothing. First refusal was offered to members of the Railway, with many items being purchased, before the remainder was offered for auction on the E-Bay auction web site.

Jon reports the tidy sum of £254.55 has been raised - a very creditable amount indeed. A cheque will be presented to Mr John Wood, Chairman of Locomotive 5542 Ltd during the Autumn Steam Gala in October.

 New Bishops Lydeard arrival...

A nice piece of news has winged this way. On Sunday 4 August Kevin Weston's partner, Jackie Quick was taken into maternity. At 6.50 pm she gave birth to a boy, weight 6 lbs 14 oz. The boy will be named Robin Leslie Frederick Weston. Jackie works on the Quantock Belle as one of the chefs.

The previous evening, a steam traction engine rumbled down Mount Street in Bishops Lydeard - clearly breakout attempt from the Rally going on at the Station - and brought Kevin out with his camera and may have convinced young Robin that it was soon time to find out what all the noise was!

A right old Swindon bash in August...

A two-day feast of diesel-hydraulic power on 8-9 August 2003. The successor to the old Great Western Railway, the Western Region, upheld the tradition of "doing things their way" at Swindon Works and constructed diesels with hydraulic transmission when everyone else built diesels using electric motors to transfer power to the wheels. The weekend will see three preserved examples of the Swindon products hard at work on an ex-GWR branch line. The full timetable is now available. Oh, and ex-GWR steam locos will also be in service! "Hot work indeed for the "Cutting Back" gang of stalwart WSRA volunteers removing the jungle that was fast enveloping the inner edge of the line round Roebuck Curve during the weekend."

"Seasoned observers of the gang’s usual efforts may comment on the less impressive than usual pile of logs at the lineside (awaiting collection for resale as firewood or building timber – the gang is self financing). The visible legacy of much sweated labour in 85° temperatures with high humidity unfortunately belies the effort and pain required to deal with a dense jungle of bramble intertwined in unsaleable elder – nice flowers, nice fruit, useless timber. And the apparent shadow in the accompanying photo is more indicative of ineptitude on the part of the photographer than it is of any solace from the blistering heat."

New web site for the Dinmore Manor Fund...

There is now an excellent web site dedicated to the work of the Dinmore Manor Fund, owners of no 7820 which has worked very consistently for a number of years on the West Somerset. A visit to www.dinmoremanor.co.uk will reveal the progress on another GWR designed locomotive, no 3850 which is undergoing restoration in Minehead and Tyseley, Birmingham.

Conserving the railway and natural heritage..

Derek Head is working on the renovation of a third lineside hut. The other two huts are much the better in appearance to our passing passengers and also are now structurally sound.

As some of you may know, I have a soft spot for swallows and I am delighted to learn from Derek that all his works are carried out with concern and sympathy for the families of these wonderful birds. So much so that swallows are continuing to nest in the all three huts.

Minehead Station Car Park to go...

On the evening of 30 June, the West Somerset District Council agreed to locate their brand new "centralised" office on the site of the existing car park next to the main building at Minehead Station.

The alternatives - keeping the existing offices at Williton and Minhead, or replacing the existing Williton site with a centralised office - were calculated as costing the local taxpayer more than the approved scheme.

In a Press Release, the District Council suggest the development could lead to "...expansion of tourism facilities around the railway, which could include a turntable...". The text also states that "..worries about our new offices impinging on the railway’s plans for expansion are now shown to be unfounded...". Neither statement is qualified by fact in the press release.

We have received a drawing, produced by the District Council, of the proposed development. Click here to view...

 Vintage Vehicle and Steam Fayre

The West Somerset Railway Association’s Vintage Vehicle and Steam Fayre is now starting the “run in” for its 17th annual event, held on 2 and 3 August at Station Fields, Bishops Lydeard.

With vehicles as varied as a 1915 Model T Tourer entered by a local owner from Bishops Lydeard to the precocious Morris Minor 100’s entered by drivers across the southwest there is something for the motor enthusiast to see.

A sample of other interesting vehicles are a 1935 Alvis Silver Eagle, 1930 Morris Cowley flat nose and a rare 1931 BSA ‘V’ twin.

A graceful 1958 Jaguar XK150 has also been entered into the classic car section of the rally. However ‘The Cat’ which returns to Bishops Lydeard will not be recreating the advertising blurb of the year (1958)

'You don’t say watch my dust, but watch my rubber as the tyres sing when you drive this speed Queen of the road'

Another interesting vehicle in the line up is a 1952 Jowett Javelin saloon car. Made by Jowett Cars of Bradford between 1906 and 1954. The Javelin was powered by a 1486cc flat four watercooled engine with twin carburettors.

There is still time to enter car exhibits for the rally. Details are available from Rob Lindley on 01823 433315

 The Black Pig sails north...

Not the Captain Pugwash variety, but ex-GWR 2-8-0T no 5224 - affectionally known on the WSR as the "Black Pig" - has left Somerset by road for the Midlands. The loco will appear as one of many guest engines at Barrow Hill's "Great Western" event this weekend.

Readers will be pleased to learn that the loco - a member of the Waterman Railway Heritage Trust fleet - will return to this Railway after the weekend.

 Hymek roars into action...

Fans of the Maybach Music will be interested to note that "Hymek" no D7017 is rostered for the diesel schedules on 12-13 July starting with the 9.40am Bishops Lydeard to Minehead.

The diesel-hydraulic also gets to head the evening Chippie from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back on Saturday 12 July.

 Ragwort...

Ragwort seems to thrive on the lineside of the West Somerset Railway. Whilst the bright yellow flowers might seem attractive, the plant is said to be poisonous to animals including grazing livestock. At least one of our volunteers has been pulling ragwort from the lineside for a number of years and reports that the plant seems slightly less common this year. This important work will help stop the spread of Ragwort to neighbouring land where it could really create some problems.

For more on Ragwort, visit "Ragwort - the Facts" from the Donkey Sanctuary, who know a thing or two about this.

A look back at the Sea Defence Works...

The Environment Agency have looked back at the Minehead Sea Defence Works project of a few years back. The Railway, of course, played a major role providing the route for the stone trains hauled by English, Welsh, Scottish Railway locos from Mendip. In all around 100,000 tonnes were hauled down to Minehead on WSR metals.

 Passenger figures doing very well...

The Railway report "Up to the end of June we had carried 67472 passengers in the year to date compared with 63344 at the same stage of 2002. This leaves us some 6.5% up on a year on year comparison."

More Class 56 loco hauled specials...

Whilst details of two festive events have been finalised - the Carol Trains and Dunster-by-Candlelight Specials - the Railway have announced that Pathfinders Tours will be running two Class 56 diesel-hauled excursions to the Candlelight event on 5-6 December 2003.

One excursion is scheduled to run to Dunster and Minehead from Cardiff and the other from Worcester.

Update: On 2 July, we checked with Pathfinder Tours who could not confirm the above excursions. But watch this space...
