 Events and highlights

"A Somerset Branch Line in 1965"

 ·  A trio of former British Railways Western Region diesel hydraulic locomotives in use – Western no D1010 "Western Campaigner", Hymek no D7017 and Class 14 no D9526.
 ·  Two steam locomotives also in use.
 ·  All train services hauled by locomotives typical of the steam-to-diesel transition period in the mid-1960’s.
 ·  Intensive timetable, with plenty of diesel haulage on offer.
 ·  Demonstration diesel-hauled branch line freight train.
 ·  Lots of authentic touches – including train reporting numbers, carriage roof boards etc.
 ·  Museums open at Bishops Lydeard, Washford and Blue Anchor.
 ·  Bar and buffet car facilities on all trains.
 ·  Day & Weekend rover tickets available.
 ·  Gift shops, refreshments, free parking.
 ·  Bus service between Taunton and the WSR.

 Locomotives...

The following engines are expected to be in action over the two days...

 • The Diesel & Electric Preservation Group’s excellent fleet of former British Railways Western Region diesel hydraulic locomotives – "Western" no D1010 "Western Campaigner", Hymek no D7017 and Class 14 no D9526 – will work many train services.

 • The steam diagrams will be worked by two Swindon-built engines from the WSR steam fleet – GWR 4-6-0 no 4936 "Kinlet Hall" and BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820 "Dinmore Manor".

 Other features...

A special demonstration freight train – featuring a rake of period wagons – will operate a forty-mile diagram on both days.

On the Saturday, a special train will run from Bishops Lydeard to Norton Fitzwarren – with no D1010 at the Taunton end – on Saturday 9 August, giving passengers the unique opportunity to see "Western" no D1015 "Western Champion" pass by at speed heading west on a main line charter. A unique opportunity, and not to be missed!

Shed visits - The Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton Station on both days, and there will also be opportunities to see and photograph various diesel locomotives in the yard area.

Museums - At Bishops Lydeard, come and see the many exhibits and displays of railway interest – including many new ones – inside The Gauge Museum on platform 1. Blue Anchor Railway Museum will also be open, as will the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust’s museum and site at Washford.

Model railways - The Taunton Model Railway Group’s layouts at Bishops Lydeard – including the excellent new Bath Green Park exhibit – will be open throughout the Gala (separate, small admission charge). There is also a large model railway inside The Gauge Museum, also at Bishops Lydeard.

Retail outlets - The Railway’s principal shops at Minehead and Bishops Lydeard will both be open throughout the Gala – offering a wide range of gifts, souvenirs, books, videos etc – and shops at several of the intermediate stations will also be open. A small number of sales and information stands will also be present.

 Souvenir programme...

A special souvenir programme – which will include a full working timetable (including freight train timings) and the locomotive roster for both days – will be available in advance (from 10 days before the event) from Minehead Station, and from stations over the Gala itself, priced £2.50.

Please note that all privilege ticket, free pass and voucher facilities will not apply at the Swindon Heritage Diesel Gala. Ordinary fares apply to all passengers.

 Catering...

Buffet and bar facilities will be available on all train services during the weekend, serving a range of hot and cold food, tea & coffee and a range of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – including local real ale.
