The Taunton Group of the West Somerset Railway Association held their Annual Photographic Competition at the GWRSA in Taunton on Monday 5 January. During a lively evening, the prints were judged by the members, whilst Mr Don Bishop ARPS a professional photographer from Huntspill judged the 35mm slides.
Just as in 2008, Tom Adams won First and Second Prizes in the Heritage Railway section of the prints, with a shot of Tangmere at Teignmouth and No 5552 near Bodmin. Tom Adams also won the Modern Railway prints section, with a group of light engines near Dawlish; in the Non-Railway prints section, Tom Adams won First Prize with a Nightime in London scene whilst Peter Darke took second place with a snow scene in Courchvevel.
In the 35mm slides section, Alan Randle won First Prize in the Heritage Railway section, with a view of SDJR 2-8-0 no 88 at Blue Anchor whilst Peter Darke's picture of A4s at York gained second prize; Alan Randle won the Modern Railway section with a Swiss Railway Scence, and Mike Pollard took second place with a view of a German electric train the the snow; and in the Non-Railway section, Mike Pollard took First Prize with "Ski tracks in the snow" whilst Peter Darke shared joint Second Prize with a picture of boats on the River Vilaine in Brittany, with John Sparkes who entered a very pleasant scene of Cottages by the Tone on the Somerset Levels.
The Taunton Group are grateful to Mr Bishop for his decisive judging, and for his complimentary and constructive comments on the photography, and to the GWRSA for hosting the meeting.
