Level Crossings

 • The WSR Plc have issued the following press release...
The West Somerset Railway is backing a National Campaign to improve safety on Level Crossings. General Manager Paul Conibeare Said “Motorists must take more care at Level Crossings and obey traffic signals. Trains can not stop instantly, and even though ours are limited to 25 miles per hour it is never worth taking a chance. Even if there is no train due special or works trains can catch you unawares.”
Network Rail are spending £3 million on a hard-hitting advertising campaign to get the message home that level crossings must be used sensibly as a basic tenet of personal safety around railway lines.
John Armitt, Network Rail’s Chief Executive said: “Too many people die at level crossings every year – it’s a senseless waste of life. Level crossings are safe if used correctly, but misuse them and your chance of surviving being hit by a train is virtually zero. Our aim is to shake complacency of level crossing users who endanger themselves and others.”
West Somerset Railway Manager Paul Conibeare echoed the sentiments and added “A steam locomotive pulling six carriages weighs between 250 and 300 hundred tons which is a considerable force if it comes into contact with something or worse still somebody. It should be borne in mind that this with this weight stopping is not instantaneous.”
Mr Conibeare added: “With the continuing growth of business the West Somerset Railway is busier than ever and even if there is no timetabled passenger service trains due there is a likelihood of a works train, a Steam Enginemen’s Course or a rail mounted track machine coming along. All of these will be large and heavy and dangerous to anyone who tries to cross the line in front of them. We would ask everyone to think of the possible hazards and to be patient for a few minutes that can make the difference between a safe day and a potential tragedy. Please take particular care as the Summer Holidays approach, and never walk on the Railway, or allow children to cross the line unsupervised.”
