| Planning application submitted...

The West Somerset Railway Association has today submitted a formal application to Taunton Deane Borough Council in connection with the development of the land acquired last year at Norton Fitzwarren. The application is for the formation of new embankments and railway lines to form a triangle for the turning of railway locomotives and stock.
If approved the primary embankment would run from a point close to Norton Bridge across the field to join the disused branch on a sweeping curve running toward Barnstaple. The ruling gradient would be 1:100. A secondary embankment would run away from the mid point of this first embankment to rejoin the disused branch close to the site of the original Norton junction where the Minehead and Barnstaple lines diverged.
Ultimately this would give us a triangle completely isolated from the main running line and large enough to turn a locomotive and several coaches. In the short term a temporary chord is proposed to allow us to form a smaller triangle that could be commissioned more quickly whilst issues of overhead cables and full access to the disused branch are resolved.
Subject to approval we would hope that construction on site could begin next winter and after a period of settling the new embankments could have track laid on them during the 2006 season. This is dependant upon the successful negotiation of construction contracts and of course the availability of the necessary funds.
The Association Board is extremely pleased that this milestone has been reached just twelve months from the completion of the initial purchase and grateful to the various authorities who have assisted us in preparing plans that we hope will be acceptable and approved in due course. The Board is also grateful for the enthusiasm and support shown by Association members and the PLC.
It is hoped that a decision on the application may be forthcoming in April or May when we will announce the outcome. In the meantime the application is available for public review at the offices of Taunton Deane Borough Council and a copy will shortly be made available for personal inspection at the Association’s office at Bishops Lydeard.
