I guess the Railway would welcome requests for small bundles of leaflets from people who can genuinely help "spread the word".
Later in January, this web site will be providing images of the front and back at full size for those of us who can print our own copies for local display at the shop, library, office and so on.

One of three main line steam excursions planned by St Albans Travel, a special train from London to Minehead and back will be hauled by no 4472 on 12 May 2002.
Of course, the appearance of the celebrated loco would be only the second appearance of an Eastern machine on the Minehead branch, following the very popular visit of LNER B1 4-6-0 no 61264 in 2001.
These details have yet to be confirmed.

It appears current plans will see the bridge having an additional span to preserve the right of way of the disused Grand Western Canal, which may at some future time be restored. The course of the canal can just be traced to the immediate south of the crossing.
The bridge will also span the route of the old up slow line and preserve a future reinstated independent route from the WSR to Taunton.

Several routes were proposed during the consultation, and one of the more likely options would have created two bridges over (at Williton and Bye Farm) and one under (near Black Monkey) the West Somerset Railway, no doubt creating both disruption to train services and possible freight traffic during construction. Not to mention some new vantage points for photographers!

In the driving cab, the whole area has been cleaned and the desk has been repainted a blue colour with the controls and dials receiving a coat of silver around the edges.
It was hoped that the DMBS was to have taken part in the recent 1960's weekend but due to pressure of work in other areas it did not appear. However, when manpower allows, and all the other finishing off jobs are complete, we should see a green DMBS running on the line soon.

I can recall the ease with which Harold could bar over rails - others would struggle yet he would first lift his cap, and then jab in the crowbar under the metals and then seemingly without effort, slide the rail over.
Before he joined the Somerset, he was long-time on the Western permanent way and clearly brought hard-earned skills to great effect which we all enjoy today.

So, with all trains/movements, added to trainspotters' notebooks would be GWR 4-6-0 no 6024; GWR 4-6-0 no 5029; BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820; BR(W) 2-6-2T no 4160; Hymek D7017; Western D1010; Class 47 no 47726 and Class 67 no 67026. Not a bad haul for a basic timetable...

"I first proposed this event to both the WSR plc and Somerset CAMRA some three years ago. While, at the time, I thought it would be a good idea I did not dare to hope we would be so well established so soon. And that is what the job is really all about; providing the highest possible level of care and attention to the needs of the passenger. As the title implies there is an important revenue protection element to the job, but more revenue is generated by creating the Goodwill that comes from good public relations than from catching the occasional dog without a ticket!
Depending on the timetable in operation duties last about 8 hours and do demand being on one’s feet all day, mostly on a moving train, so an element of physical fitness is needed. There is some lifting and cleaning involved. Training in safety, on the two types of ticket machine in use, in helping disabled passengers and in other aspects of the job is given by means of a new volunteer "shadowing" an old hand for several duties. Only when a new volunteer feels confident to go solo are they rostered to a duty on their own. At all times the Guard is in charge of the train so is available for guidance whenever necessary.
The one drawback to the job is that it is highly seasonal. Only two TTIs are needed per day during the low season but the requirement rises to five or more during the high season and Galas. Therefore all TTIs are encouraged to look around and select a second interest to pursue during the quieter months.
The system is very flexible and covers TTIs who work one day a week or one day a month, through to TTIs who live away from the area and come down for just a few days a year.
If you enjoy meeting people and would welcome an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the WSR as part of a hard working but friendly team, just give us a ring (01643 704996).

The DMS (Driving Motor Second) and the TCL still have yet to be painted in the same fashion. When the few remaining internal jobs on the DMBS are complete it will go into service on the WSR onto the WSR's own DMU.
Because the DMBS 51880 has a dodgy head gasket and other mechanical glitches it needs to come out of service for a while, so by putting the green DMBS into service will keep the DMU running.
This will lead to a Hybrid unit running on the WSR formed of class 117/115 DMU in two completely different liveries! (It now gets a bit complicated, but read on...)
The TA's TCL from their unit is going to be painted choc and cream to fit in with WSR MK1 stock. One of the WSR's TCL's ( Trailer, Composite, Lav ) going to be converted to have a mini buffet in it (like the existing one) thereby creating the second TCBL ( Trailer, Composite, Buffet, Lav ) on the WSR, BUT, this is going to be painted green to match the TA's DMBS!
The reason for this complicated state of affairs is because there is a need to have a buffet on every service train, and the TA were not keen on having their TCL converted but were happy to have it painted in a different livery! (I suppose if ever they take their unit away it means that it is still complete as built but just different colours!) So when all is done, there will be two DMU's available to run on the WSR, one in early BR green with whiskers, and one in red and cream ( called by some Stathclyde PTE colours!), and both with a mini buffet.
It is hoped the TA's/Scottie/Green (call it what you will!) DMU will be running as a complete unit on the forthcoming 1960's weekend.

Comment: The Railway has, from its inception, had an on/off relationship with the harbour at Watchet, and indeed, has been instrumental in improvements over the years since 1862. Whilst some current observers, including me, might still wish for a resumption of commercial traffic both sea and rail at Watchet, the new development as a leisure facility may, just, provide additional new passenger traffic potential for the Railway. Yachts arriving from inland boatyards by rail is not expected. Time and tide will tell...

The WSRA continue "Another small engine to visit the WSR in coming months is Terrier No. 32678 from the Kent & East Sussex Rly which will be at the WSR for the Autumn gala event 14th - 16th September and for the 1960's weekend 6th & 7th October 2001. This engine was based on the WSR for a short while in the 1970's following its removal from the Butlins Holiday camp in Minehead along with 46229 Duchess of Hamilton. A group of volunteers started restoration works but it soon became apparent that the engine was always going to be too small for the long and heavilly graded WSR and it was sold on to a private owner in Kent. Subsequently the engine was sold to the KESR based Terrier trust and restoration completed a couple of years ago. The engine now sports lined BR Black livery. For the September gala event the engine is expected to work a number of single coach shuttles between Minehead & Blue Anchor on Friday 14th September and a Minehead - Bishops Lydeard trip on the Saturday and Sunday mornings with shuttles on the Norton Fitzwarren section all day followed by a return run to Minehead. Details of its workings for the 1960's weekend have not yet been finalised, but a delightful appearance with a single Green Mk1 coach and two milk tanks should not be ruled out. "

Of great technical interest is the plan to extend Electric Key Token (EKT) along the entire line. It is stated that this will be completed over a five year period. It will certainly enhance the working of the line.
The disappointment comes through clear when we learn about the postponed upgrading of the junction with the national network at Norton Fitzwarren. Railtrack does have more pressing demands on its resources and I think we all understand. With luck, we are now looking at comencement in two or three years.
The delays in progressing the engineering work on S&DJR no 88 are noted, along with delays with the restoration and rebuild of GWR no 5193 as a "mogul".
The effects of the Foot & Mouth disease upon the fortunes of South West tourism are yet to be fully understood, and the Chairman expresses his concerns in his Report.

Buffet and dining cars did exceptional business, shops and sales stands were busy from opening to closure, TTIs battled through crowded trains valiantly, booking offices kept selling and visitors appreciated the chance to look around workshops and behind the scenes. The photographers also 'played ball' magnificently.
There were two mechanical problems, both on Friday when 80136 became stage shy in the morning and 4936 ran into difficulties on an up train in the afternoon. Nor were we our normal immaculate selves on the time keeping front, particularly on Saturday where the last train left Minehead an hour late and we will need to see what went awry with a tried and trusted timetable apart from the mechanical problems of the morning.
However to everyone who planned the event, worked trains, parked cars, drove buses and did all the other necessary jobs the WSR and West of England tourism generally owes a big debt of thanks. We put a lot of people and money into the local economy."
To add to the above, this web site offers a hearty thanks to those who visited the Railway during the Gala, and helped publicise the event, and finally, to all those at the sharp end.

The WSR web site states, "As you are aware the farming industry and the activity of the countryside generally is under great pressure from the current outbreak of Foot and Mouth and this clearly affects all aspects of rural life, including the railways that pass through such areas. After some heart searching we have decided to inform holders of our Lineside Photographic Passes that we must suspend the photographic rights normally conveyed by possession of an LSP. Currently the area through which the WSR runs is free of the disease but it is occurring at no great distance from the Railway and West Somerset and Taunton Deane must be at some risk. We have therefore dicided that we must impose this suspension until advised by MAFF and the National Farmers' Union that the surrounding countryside is free of the disease and movement restrictions are lifted.
This is not a decison that we are taking lightly. We have had an excellent relationship with LSP holders in the past and are very aware that as a group you have behaved in a highly responsible way. However under the prevailing circumstances the WSR has a duty to trade responsibly and if Foot and Mouth were to appear after someone photographing trains had been seen in the affected area we would clearly come under pressure to suspend operations altogehter. Our own staff are under instructions that they should only join the Railway via Station areas and our Permanent Way Dept is not only following this instruction but are carrying approved disinfectant supplies with them and using these whenever they arrive or leave their working areas.
So, please bear with us in this matter. If everyone is patient and responsible for a short while the risk will probably fade and we can all enjoy our own pursuits again in the usual manner. To compensate for any loss of enjoyment we will extend pass validity when you next renew. Thank you for your co-operation. We will advise you of the lifting of the suspension as soon as it comes off."

The bus driver, Alan Grieve, reports "The Vintage Bus service from Dunster Station to Dunster Village on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday was a great success with 149 passenger journeys on Sunday and a staggering 244 on Monday, these figures being up by 39.3% and 83.5% respectively on the equivalent days in 2000. This service, which is provided free by the WSR in vehicles hired from the Rexquote Vintage Fleet, is much appreciated by passengers, many of whom take the opportunity to ride up to Dunster and walk back and enthusiasts are always interested to see what the weekend will produce. This time it was 1937 East Kent Leyland Tiger TS8 JG9938, immaculately restored with newly recovered seats in the correct mocquette which attracted much comment and sounded superb making all the right pre-war Leyland sounds. The pictures [see the NewsPix page] show two views of the vehicle at Dunster Station in one of which I am standing extremely proudly by the Tiger. It was a privilege to be entrusted with such a vehicle for the weekend."

It then goes on to wonder why, having decided to build the line, did the Directors of the Minehead Railway build it along the most expensive and demanding (in terms of civil engineering) route when they could have far more cheaply and easily followed the Turnpike Road and taken in a number of populous communities along the way.
The price is just £1.50 (by post) and all the proceeds go towards Friends of Minehead Station and the upkeep and further restoration of Minehead Station. It is also stocked at the "Buffer Stop" and "Readers Halt" at Minehead Station.

"First was The Exmoor Express, hauled by GWR 4-6-0 no 4936 'Kinlet Hall', from London. BR(W) 4-6-0 no 7820 'Dinmore Manor' was attached on the front to add some extra power. The weather was wet and the rails greasy."
"Some 40 minutes later, in came a Pathfinder charter from the Midlands with a Class 47 diesel on the front with GWR 'Castle' 4-6-0 no 5029 'Nunney Castle' behind. It is thought the Castle had problems with injectors. The 47 was taken off and BR(W) 2-6-2T no4160 put on the front. There was a problem with getting vacuum so the generator car was taken off the back by the BR class 08 shunter and the train eventually left in clouds of smoke and steam."
"The two trains were due to be in Minehead together for a time which must have been quite a sight. Hopefully, the pubs and teashops did a roaring trade."

BR(W) "Manor" no 7828 "Odney Manor" ran 8703 miles on the WSR in 2000 and following agreement with its owner Ken Ryder will be on the WSR for a further year to the end of October 2001. The boiler was lifted from the frames at the end of 2000 following evidence of cracking in the outer firebox. Ultrasonic testing has been carried out and as a result 2 sections of plate will have to be cut out along with a dozen stays and new stays and plate fitted.
BR(W) 2-6-2T no 4160 achieved the highest WSR mileage in 2000, 10775, bringing the total since restoration in 1993 to 59,857. Winter work includes fitting a new cab floor, attention to the vacuum brake cylinder, a valve exam and attention to the left hand crosshead to piston rod joint.

The rights granted to holders of Lineside Photographic Permits to enter safe areas of the Railway's property for photographic purposes are temporarily withdrawn until the Foot and Mouth restrictions are lifted.
We recognise that the Railway remains of interest to photographers and we have identified the following areas on Railway property which we think can be safely used by photographers without infringing Foot and Mouth restrictions.

The full length of Minehead platform is now open to the public. The locomotive sheds and yard will be open on Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April 2001.
DUNSTER
An area of the Permanent Way yard will be available within a fenced off area.
BLUE ANCHOR
An area on the down side of the level crossing will be fenced close to the Camping Coaches. Good views are also obtainable from the beach.
WASHFORD
The Museum will be open as normal. In addition an area on the Down Side at the down end of the Platform towards the accommodation bridge will be fenced.
WATCHET
The station is in an urban area.
WILLITON
Shed and yards open to visitors on Friday 30, Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April. An area will be fenced off on the downside beyond the Tarmac Shed.
STOGUMBER

CROWCOMBE HEATHFIELD
A fenced area will be near the old loading dock which will be accessible via the gate in Station Lane.
BISHOPS LYDEARD
NOTE: Access to the down platform must be via the up side and the crossings. The down side approach road is sealed off.
Clearly there are public areas alongside the line which will remain open. Please obey all restriction signs posted by the landowners and the local authorities. If parking at the side of the public roads please do so in a manner that allows other traffic to continue to flow smoothly. The WSR shares almost 50 miles of boundary fence with farmers. Their industry is in crisis. Please respect the requirement for strict observance of these and any other restrictions. If we all act responsibly we will all have an enjoyable weekend and remain on good terms with our neighbours.
We are advised that the authorities will not hesitate to prosecute. The regulations allow fines up to £5000.
We have advised the authorities of the arrangements we have made, and that we NEVER give permission for anyone to enter private land.
REFUNDS
If you have bought a Lineside Pass for the Event and are not content with these arrangements we will offer the following:-
a) A full refund provided the pass is returned to us BEFORE the day(s) for which is has been issued.
b) Its transferral to part-payment for a Rover Ticket. To obtain this please surrender the Pass at a Booking Office or to a Travelling Ticket Inspector on a train BEFORE eleven a.m. on the first day of its validity.

The new floor in the Booking Office is now complete, along with new wall panelling. Next for the chippie treatment are the doors.
The line through Crowcombe has been busy, despite no passenger trains since New Years Day, thanks to many engineers trains passing through with ballast from Bishops Lydeard in connection with the relaying exercise near Leigh Woods, between Crowcombe and Stogumber.
Also, seen using the line, are Mendip Rail who are training drivers on Class 59 locomotives.

"Taunton’s Jackie Ballard and North Devon Liberal Democrat MP Nick Harvey will take to the skies next Friday to get an aerial view of the disused line between Taunton and South Molton, which was axed despite major local opposition in 1960s.Now a North Devon councillor, Dick Joy, wants the authorities to carry out a feasibility study to see whether the line could be reopened both for passengers and freight. It is unlikely the route would be opened all the way to Barnstaple because the track was taken up by the building of the North Devon Link Road. The idea has won strong support from Mr Harvey, who believes it could qualify for Government funding, especially in the light of the recent Rural White Paper. The Railway Development Society says the proposal is not one of its current priorities, but is “worth looking at”. TauntonDeane Borough Council’s economic development officer, Martin Dean, warned there would be costly “infrastructure difficulties” to reinstate the line due to piecemeal development along its route, with much of the land sold off in sections. One part of the track was lost to the building of the Milverton by-pass, for example, and homes have been built on part of the old line at Oake. But Jackie Ballard has welcomed the idea as “interesting”. “We won’t know how feasible it is until we take a look, but anything that would open up the rail network is to be welcomed,” she said."
