Dunster by Candlelight 1 and 2 December 2000

Dunster by Candlelight is one of the most popular events held in West Somerset during the winter season.

The highly picturesque village - with its famous castle, church, working mill, yarn market and many other historic buildings - steps back into history with the peaceful glow of candles in virtually every window.

Each year thousands of visitors from all parts of the country come to enjoy shopping and entertainment, and just to savour the unique atmosphere.

Parking is never easy, so why not let the train take the strain! The award-winning West Somerset Railway will be running special trains to Dunster by Candlelight on both days of the event from Bishops Lydeard, Williton and Watchet.

Simply park your car at the station car park, join the train, sit back in your seat and enjoy the journey.

Our train services to Dunster by Candlelight are always very popular, so advance booking is essential.

Special Steam Trains...

• Special steam train runs 1 and 2 DECEMBER 2000
• Travel to DUNSTER by CANDLELIGHT by STEAM!
• Special steam train departs from BISHOPS LYDEARD at 6pm
• Also calls at WILLITON at 6.30pm and WATCHET at 6.35pm
• Choice of either
  • alight at Dunster at 6.55pm and walking the mile to Dunster village. Bring a torch!
  • or at Minehead at 7.00pm for transfer by First Southern National Bus to Dunster
• Around TWO HOURS or so in Dunster
• Return special steam train leaves Minehead at 9.45pm (last connecting First Southern National bus leaves Dunster Steep car park at 9.15pm) and calls at Dunster at 9.50pm.
• Special train arrives back at Bishops Lydeard at 10.45pm.
• Fares to Dunster from
  • Bishops Lydeard: Adult £9, Child £4
  • Williton: Adult £7, Child £3
  • Watchet: Adult £6.50, Child £2.75
• Fares to Minehead from
  • Bishops Lydeard: Adult £10, Child £5
  • Williton: Adult £8, Child £4
  • Watchet: Adult £7.50, Child £3.75
• On all trains, during the return journey a glass of sherry and a mince pie will be served.
• A soft drink or a tea/coffee will be served to children and adults not wishing to have a sherry.

Extra train...

On 2 December 2000, a heritage diesel train will supplement the special steam train. The extra train departs Bishops Lydeard at 5pm, calling at Williton at 5.30pm and Watchet at 5.35pm, with a choice of alighting at Dunster or Minehead. Returning from Minehead at 8.45pm and Dunster at 8.50pm Call 01643 704996 for more details.

Also on 2 December 2000, Cheshire Railtours are running a High Speed Train from Bristol Temple Meads (calling at Bedminster, Nailsea, Yatton, Weston Super Mare, Highbridge, Bridgwater and Taunton and then on to the West Somerset Railway for Dunster.
