The West Somerset Railway Autumn Steam Gala promises to be another excellent event, with an impressive collection of locomotives – in short, a four-day steam feast! Come and join us for what promises to be a superb weekend of steam action – a great event for all the family.

 • The Auto Train...
Our very popular Great Western auto train – featuring the immaculate trailer No 178 (built by the GWR in 1930) – will be in operation every day of the Gala on a variety of workings. Details of the auto train services can be found in the timetables below. Please note there are no buffet and toilet facilities on the auto train, also due to the design of the vehicle, there is no access for passengers confined to their wheelchair.

The best way to enjoy the Gala is to purchase a Rover ticket - which gives complete freedom of travel on the line for the validity of the ticket.
"Four for the price of Three" - a real bargain - purchase a Four Day Rover ticket in advance for the price of a Three Day Rover ticket! Please note this particular offer is only available for tickets purchased in advance.

Buffet and bar facilities will be available on most train services during the weekend, serving a range of high quality locally-produced hot and cold food, tea and coffee, and a range of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Shed visits The shed and workshop at Minehead will be open between 10am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday only (admission charge of £1 per person) – a unique opportunity, as access is normally very restricted to the public on safety grounds. Come and see engines resting on shed in between their duties, and visit the workshop and view work on engines undergoing overhaul, including BR(W) ‘Manor’ 4-6-0 no 7828 "Odney Manor".
Museums The Gauge Museum on Platform 1 at Bishops Lydeard, Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust museum at Washford and the Blue Anchor Railway Museum will all be open throughout the Gala. At Washford, a separate admission charge is payable, but this includes access to the shed and sidings, where shunting demonstrations will be taking place with "Kilmersdon" and "Isabel".
Model Railway The base of the Taunton Model Railway Group, adjacent to The Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard, will also be open (small separate admission charge payable).
Shunting There will be shunting demonstrations over the Gala at Dunster Yard on Saturday & Sunday from 11am to 3.45pm, and at Washford Yard on Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 10.30am to 4.30pm. These can be observed in safety from the station platform.
Dunster shuttle bus There will be a regular free bus service running between the station and village at Dunster on the Saturday and Sunday. This will run to/from the station forecourt and connect with train services.
Book signings Local author Richard Derry will be signing copies of his various railway books at Blue Anchor on the Saturday & Sunday.
Art and Sales There will be Art Exhibitions at both Minehead and Bishops Lydeard. A number of Sales Stands will also be in attendance - along with the major station shops at Minehead and Bishops Lydeard, not forgetting the retail outlets at other stations along the line...
 • Souvenir Programme
A special souvenir programme – which will include the complete working timetables and the engine rosters for all four days – will be available in advance (from 30 September), and from stations during the Gala, priced £2.50.
 • Taunton-Bishops Lydeard Train Shuttles...
First Great Western will operate regular shuttle trains on and off the Minehead Branch via Norton Fitzwarren Junction during the last two days of the Autumn Steam Gala - six trains on Saturday 7 October 2006 and six on Sunday 8 October 2006. These will be timed to connect with mainline services at Taunton giving those travelling from longer distances the chance to simply change trains at Taunton for a train onto the Minehead branch for the first time in over 35 years! The service is provided and operated by FGW who will collect the fares.

The journey between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard takes around twenty minutes. The fare is £5 return (or £4.90 single).
 • Free bus service...
A special free bus service linking Taunton Railway Station, the Park and Ride Car Park at Silk Mill and Bishops Lydeard Station will run every 30 minutes on Friday 6 October, and every 20 minutes on Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 October. The service will start from 9.30am from Taunton Station each day, with the last bus connecting with the final train arrival at Bishops Lydeard.
 • Car parking...
Free car parking will be available at Bishops Lydeard, but please arrive at least thirty minutes before the departure of the train on which you initially wish to travel. Please note that car parking will be very limited at all WSR stations over the weekend – if you are coming through Taunton you are advised to use our free connecting bus service (see paragraph above) between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard.
 • Getting home...
A special dmu service will operate on Monday 9 October, departing from Minehead and calling at all WSR stations, which will connect at Bishops Lydeard with a special WSR connecting bus service to Taunton (Silk Mill Park & Ride and Railway Station).
