These pages are dedicated to the memory of an ex-Somerset & Dorset Railwayman, Derek Edge 1927-1996, my Dad, who worked in the fifties and early sixties at Sturminster Newton, Blandford and Bailey Gate Stations, and who gave me no chance of escaping a lifetime interest in all things railway. He even managed to give his growing son a bedroom window with a wonderful view across the Dorset countryside, with trains passing in the middle distance, including the mid-afternoon "Bailey Gate Belle". Thanks, Dad.

This is an "unofficial" web site, and relies heavily on contributions. Grateful thanks to all who have offered help with contributions of text and images, also details and corrections, and special thanks to Hein Burger, Commercial Manager of the West Somerset Railway plc for his initial and continued support. This site now enjoys considerable support and a steadily growing number of visitors - my thanks to all for every snippet of information, and for every visit.

| Why a web site...

Simple really. The Internet offers a great opportunity to share so many things. Doing just that for the West Somerset Railway seemed quite a good idea back in 1998 when access to the Internet became possible. Why the WSR? It's a long tale. The short version relates how a new job in Taunton led to moving house to Bishops Lydeard in 1976. Being a volunteer for the very fledgling Swanage line, it was easy to transfer those efforts to the preserved line just up the road - the WSR. Since then I have spent time as publicity officer for the West Somerset Railway Association; publicity manager for the Railway Company; also Station Master at Bishops Lydeard; Booking Clerk and Guard. I have also published, with chums, several WSR books. And all that time, I took many WSR photographs, even after an enforced relocation to Peterborough in 1984. The web site gives me the chance to continue the publicity work and at the same time create an online collection of stories, history, news, pictures and maps. The best - and quite unexpected - was the creation of a whole new WSR community, including the many contributors to this site, who share their interests on the web as well as for real when on the Railway itself.
