A West Somerset Steam Railway Trust Project
The GWR undertook a large scale - 2 chains to the inch - survey of the Minehead Branch in 1912 and published the results in a full colour lithographic document complete with leather covers. Each page is around three foot by two foot. The West Somerset Steam Railway Trust (WSSRT) is fortunate to have acquired a copy of this historical document. Reproduction of the original is not easy due to the difficulties posed by the sheer size of the pages during scanning, not to mention the binding. also, the passage of time has created discoloration to some pages. Nevertheless, the scanning is proceeding.
Meanwhile, Ian Coleby, the WSSRT Archivist and a master cartographer, has patiently redrawn the entire document, this time in black and white, thus making reproduction much, much easier. These new drawings paint a picture of how the line was in 1912 - surely the stuff that dreams are made of for a historian or a railway modeller's.
